A phoneme is an abstract unit of sounds.
But the different phonetic realizations of
any phoneme is described as phones.
Example: seed /i:/ seen / Ĩ /
NOTE that these phonetic variants are
technically known as allophones.

تعريفات الرواية

1. Novel - Plot- Character- Point of View - Setting -Theme- Style
2. Parody and burlesque
It’s an imitation of an original work such as Literature, Music, Movie, Play or a musical. It mimics the style of the author, artist, or genre in a humorous or satirical way for a comic effect.
Parody and burlesque are both forms of mocking imitation. The two are not clearly distinguishable.
A burlesque:
is commonly held to lean more towards sheer fun.
A parody:
implies a rather more serious attempt to ridicule its object

3. Irony
4. Free indirect speech
Renders thought as reported speech (in the third person, past tense) but keeps to the kind of vocabulary that is appropriate to the character, and deletes some of the tags,
Like: ‘she thought,’ ‘she wondered,’ ‘she asked herself’ etc. A more formal narrative style would require. This gives the illusion of intimate access to a character’s mind, but without totally surrendering authorial participation in the discourse
5. Conversation and language
6. Realism
7. protagonist
A protagonist meaning "one who plays the first part, chief actor"[1]) is the main character (the central or primary personal figure) of a literary, theatrical, cinematic, or musical narrative, who enters conflict because of the antagonist. The audience is intended to most identify with the protagonist. In the theatre of Ancient Greece, three actors played every main dramatic role in a tragedy; the protagonist played the leading role whereas the deuteragonist and the tritagonist played the others.
The terms protagonist and main character are variously explained and, depending on the source, may denote different concepts. In fiction, the story of the protagonist can be told from the perspective of a different character (who may also, but not necessarily, be the narrator). An example would be a narrator who relates the fate of several protagonists- perhaps as prominent figures recalled in a biographical perspective.
8. Antagonist
An antagonist opponent, competitor, enemy, rival", from anti- "against" + agonizesthai "to contend for a prize,")[1] is a character, group of characters, or institution that represents the opposition against which the protagonist or protagonists must contend. In other words, an antagonist is a person or a group of people who oppose the main character(s).[2]
In the classic style of stories wherein the action consists of a hero fighting a villain/enemy, the two can be regarded as protagonist and antagonist, respectively. Of course, some narratives cast the villain the protagonist role, with the opposing hero as the antagonist.[3]
The antagonist may also represent a major threat or obstacle to the main character by their very existence, without necessarily deliberately targeting him or her.
9. Stereotype
10. Prototype

11. Bildungsroman
novel of formation, novel of education, or coming-of-age story is a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood (coming of age),] and in which, therefore, character change is extremely important

12. Cinderella theme
13. Feminism
is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women.[1][2] This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women.

Feminist theory, which emerged from these feminist movements, aims to understand the nature of gender inequality by examining women's social roles and lived experience; it has developed theories in a variety of disciplines in order to respond to issues such as the social construction of sex and gender.[4][5] Some of the earlier forms of feminism have been criticized for taking into account only white, middle-class, educated perspectives. This led to the creation of ethnically specific or multiculturalist forms of feminism.[6]

14. Postcolonial theory
As critical theory, Post-colonialism presents, explains, and illustrates the ideology and the praxis of Neo-colonialism, with examples drawn from the humanities — history and political science, philosophy and Marxist theory, sociology, anthropology, and human geography; the cinema, religion, and theology; feminism, linguistics, and post-colonial literature, of which the Anti-conquest narrative genre presents the stories of colonial subjugation of the subaltern man and woman.

15. Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing or adumbrating is a literary device in which an author hints certain plot developments that perhaps will come later in the story.[1] It is used to arouse the listener about how the story will proceed and mentally prepare them for how it will unfold.[2][3]
A hint that is designed to mislead the audience is referred to as a red herring. A similar device is the flash-forward (also known as prolepsis). However, foreshadowing only hints at a possible outcome within the confinement of a narrative. A flashforward is a scene that takes the narrative forward in time from the current point of the story in literature, film, television, and other media.[4][5]
16. Gothic novel
Gothic fiction, sometimes referred to as Gothic horror, is a genre or mode of literature that combines fiction, horror and Romanticism. Its origin is attributed to English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, subtitled (in its second edition) "A Gothic Story." The effect of Gothic fiction feeds on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literary pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Melodrama and parody (including self-parody) were other long-standing features of the Gothic initiated by Walpole. It originated in England in the second half of the 18th century and had much success in the 19th as witnessed by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Another well known novel in this genre, dating from the late Victorian era, is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The name Gothic refers to the (pseudo)-medieval buildings in which many of these stories take place. This extreme form of romanticism was very popular in England and Germany. The English gothic novel also led to new novel types such as the German Schauerroman and the French roman noir.

17. Byronic Hero
The Byronic hero is a variant of the Romantic hero as a type of character, named after the English Romantic poet Lord Byron. Both Byron's life and writings have been considered in different ways to exemplify the type. The Byronic hero first appears in Byron's semi-autobiographical epic narrative poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812–1818), and was described by the historian and critic Lord Macaulay as "a man proud, moody, cynical, with defiance on his brow, and misery in his heart, a scorner of his kind, implacable in revenge, yet capable of deep and strong affection".[

18. Super-ego
19. Id
20. Ego
21. Prequel
A prequel is a literary, dramatic, or filmic work whose story precedes that of a previous work,[1][2] by focusing on events that occur before the original narrative.[3] A prequel is a work that forms part of a back-story to the preceding work. Like sequels, prequels may or may not concern the same plot as the work from which they are derived. Often, they explain the background which led to the events in the original, but sometimes the connections are not as explicit. Sometimes, prequels play on the fact that the audience knows what will happen next, using deliberate references to create dramatic irony. The term is a 20th-century neologism, from pre- (from Latin prae, "before") and -quel (formed by unetymologically splitting "sequel" into supposed prefix and stem "se-quel"
22. Sequel

A sequel (also known as follow-up) is a narrative, documental, or other work of literature, film, theatre, television, music, or game that continues the story of, or expands upon, some earlier work. In the common context of a narrative work of fiction, a sequel portrays events set in the same fictional universe as an earlier work, usually chronologically following the events of that work.

In many cases, the sequel continues elements of the original story, often with the same characters and settings. A sequel can lead to a series, in which key elements appear in a number of stories. Although the difference between more than one sequel and a series is somewhat arbitrary, it is clear that some media franchises have enough sequels to become a series, whether originally planned as such or not.

Sequels are attractive to creators and to publishers because there is less risk involved in returning to a story with known popularity rather than developing new and untested characters and settings. Audiences are sometimes eager for more stories about popular characters or settings, making the production of sequels financially appealing.[2]
23. Utilitarianism
is a theory in normative ethics holding that the proper course of action is the one that maximizes utility, usually defined as maximizing happiness and reducing suffering. Classic utilitarianism's two most influential contributors are Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill.

The Meaning of the Term " Theory":
- The English word ' theory' was derived from a technical term in Ancient Greek philosophy. The word ' theoria' meant a looking at, viewing, beholding, and referring to contemplation or speculation as opposed to action.
- Theory is especially often contrasted to "practice" from Greek ' praxis'.

- In modern science the term theory or 'scientific theory' is generally understood to refer to a proposed " explanation" of " empirical phenomena" made in a way consistent with scientific method.
The Definition of a theory:
- A theory is an explanation of a phenomenon, the perception of a system and order in something observed.
- It exists in the mind.
- It has no tangible manifestation.
- It is an idea which constitutes the internal representation of a phenomena.
The Definition of a Model:
- A model is, in contrast, an external rather than an internal representation of the explanation, a realization of a theory.
- It exists as a tangible object ( diagram. A formula, a text) which stands for the idea embodied in the theory.
Main Characteristics of a Useful Model:
For a Model to be useful, it must possess the following characteristics:
1- It must faithfully represent the theory that it stands for.
2- It must do this by revealing significant characteristics of the phenomena explained by the theory.
1- It must have a heuristic function, making it easier to grasp the explanation (i.e. the theory) and doing that in a way which makes further studies easier and leads to deeper understanding.
Main Characteristics of a theory:
Ideally, a theory must reflect the following four particular criteria:
1- Empiricism: it must be testable
2- Determinism: it must be able to predict
3- Parsimony: it must be simple
4- Generality: it must be comprehensive
What is translation Theory?
1- A theory is a statement of a general principle, based on reasoned argument and supported by evidence that is intended to explain a particular fact, event, or phenomenon.
2- A theory of translation should conform as far as possible to the following criteria: Empiricism, Determinism, Parsimony, and Generality.
3- Based on the above mentioned concept of theory, Bell (1991) suggested three possible theories of translation depending on the focus of investigation:
A- A Theory of translation as a process
B- A Theory of translation as a product
C- A theory of translation as both process and product (Translating and translation)
Newmark ( 1988) says:
"Translation theory is the body of knowledge that we have about translating, extending from general principles to guidelines, suggestions and hints."

Thesaurus
Introduction: Words are not stored in memory in a random manner but in a way which permits linkage to be created between them to increase the efficiency of the storage system and to facilitate recall and retrieval.
What is thesaurus?
It provides us with the model for storing groups of words in a number of ways: where they are synonyms, antonyms, or related in other ways.
It groups lexical items on a semantic basis rather than putting them in alphabetical order
Example:
Optimism: hopefulness, hope, cheerfulness, encouragement, brightness, enthusiasm, confidence, assurance.
Antonym: pessimism
Complete synonyms are rare in language. Each word has a specific meaning of its own and is used in particular contexts.
Tall means long
However, we cannot say " a tall tree, and a long child" We have to say " a tall child and a long tree.
Hurt means damageded but we use " hurt" for human beings, and " damaged" for concrete inanimate objects such as cars.
"Ripe" and " mature" both mean ناضج
But we use "mature" for human beings and " ripe" for fruit.
Eliminate, cancel, delete, omit, remove, erase, terminate, dismiss, fire are synonyms but not substitutable for each other.
Examples:
The school team was eliminated in the first round of the competition. استبعد ، تم استبعاده
Because of the bad weather the flight was canceled. تم تأجيلها، ألغيت
I typed something wrong so I deleted it. حذفته
This washing powder will remove most stains. تزيل
I need an eraser to erase the wrong word. يمحي
He terminated the contract. ألغى العقد – فسخ
Several stanzas of the poem can be omitted. يمكن إهمالها – إسقاطها
He was dismissed for not obeying the orders. تم تسريحه من العمل
The boss fired him because he misused his position. طرده من العمل

Lexical and Semantic Fields:
A lexical or semantic field is broader in scope than the thesaurus, since it links words to words not only in terms of (1) meaning postulates such as synonyms, antonyms, and hyponyms, but also in terms of (2) syntactic occurrence (collocation) and phonological characteristics: initial sound, rhyme, etc.
Collocation is the chain relationship in lexis. A word tends to occur in relatively predictable ways with other words, certain nouns with particular adjectives and verbs, verbs with particular adverbs, etc.
Example:
"Colorless green ideas sleep furiously."
Is syntactically correct, but it violates semantic selectional rules. It breaks collocational rules.
"Homeless black cats mew pitifully."
Is accepted syntactically and semantically.
Denotation and connotation
Denotation refers to meaning which is referential, objective, cognitive, and shared property of the speech community which uses the language. It is the dictionary meaning of the word.
Connotation refers to meaning which is associational, subjective and expressive. It may or may not be shared by the community at large.
Dog: is an animal that has for legs. It barks. (denotation)
But as connotation:
Dog: is a pet animal, loyal, loveable, friendly for the English speakers
Dog: is dirty, najes, not positive for Arabic Speakers.

Semantic Deferential:
A technique has been developed by psychologists interested in the structure of memory to measure the connotative dimension of words.
The connotative meaning by this measure is arrived at by 15 (7-point) scales, consisting of a range of adjectives expressing three factors or dimensions ( evaluation, potency, activity), and judged on a 7-point scale running from +3 into -3, from the strongest positive through the neutral to the strongest negative.
See PowerPoint for examples.

Read about the 18th century background.
What was the literary and critical map during the 18th century?
The 18th century is labeled by a number of titles. One of the titles of the 18th century is the Augustine Age. Why was it called the Augustine Age? What were the characteristics of the Augustine Age that is marked the 18th century?
It is also called the Age of Dryden. Dryden is an 18 century poet, an outstanding literary figure.
It is also labeled with the Age of Reason. The whole age is rational. They had come out of the Civil War. The Civil War has just ended. They were achieving some kind of settlement. They were ready to cultivate their backyard gardens= It was a stage of relaxation- going back to meditation. They were ready to do things away from their wariness that they received during the civil war. One of the characteristics of the age is that they were well organized. It is to be traced even in their poetry. One of the most popular literary poetic structures they were using was the heroic couplet= two lines rhyming the same carrying one idea.
As for the structures of their standards, they were writing in heroic couplet. This heroic couplet goes with the Age of Reason, with organization. They are symmetrical lines rhyming the same; seizing the same, carrying one idea. It is suitable to this age of reason. There is this ability to arrange things. there is no disturbance. It was the reaction of the civil war. They were reasonable enough to become out with definite ideas and to infuse them in two lines rhyming the same. This is what we call the heroic couplet used in the Age of Reason.
What were they writing on?
They were writing on the society with completely different approach. It is not serious. It is in satirical way. They were sarcastic. They are about to criticize a number of short comings defects, demerits, mistakes used to be committed by their society.
What is the technique that made such criticism little harsh?
It is satire- satirical approach
What is satire?
To be satirical is to write in an ironical way, to be indirect, laughing at, let people to laugh at their own mistakes and then correct it.
Satire is described as a distorted mirror. It shows, concentrates on the errors, mistakes in the society. What the satire does in enlarging the mistakes, errors, defects of the society, to call for remedy, to correct them, to see the defects, underline it, to be alert about it, and then to correct it. This is what the satire does.
We have satirical epic. It is built through satirical approach.
The Rape of the Lock
The whole story is about a lady called Belinda. She has a relation with one of the high class characters. Out of this relation, there was a clash between the male and the female. The cause of this clash is that they were belonging to different political parties.
Belinda was very keen on putting make up, choosing everything very carefully, checking that everything is in its place, wearing jewelry, looking at her hair style. She was attempted by her maid. She was taking care of her pieces, preparing herself for a meeting with her lover.
Pope is describing this. It is secular- not religious, not divine situation. It is a daily routine. It is nonsense. It is an epic. The language used is a highly elevated language. Usually in an epic, we have high rank people, knights, queens, kings, warriors. The battle field is her own dressing room. The battle that she is hitting at is meeting her lover. The equipments that she is carrying , her armor is her makeup. This discrepancy between the language used to describe her as if she is going to war as if she is at the altar , scarifying . the situation is silly, trivial being described in a highly elevated language. This created a satirical tone. The satirical tone is created by the use of highly elevated language to describe trivial situation.
121 And now, unveil'd, the toilet stands display'd,
122 Each silver vase in mystic order laid.
123 First, rob'd in white, the nymph intent adores
124 With head uncover'd, the cosmetic pow'rs.

He is a narrator in an epic. He is describing the setting room, the mantel of this lady.
He is describing a young lady at her mantel beautifying herself. She is surrounded by her makeup and ornamentation, brushes, combs, perfumes. It is the language that is making this satirical sense, that is creating the epic dimension. The epic dimension is being suggested to our mind through the use of the high elevated language.
Mystic= mysterious – it is not a silly thing to be done.
We have been given a note of some divinity. It is like that he is describing a magnifying situation, something related to the church.
With head uncover'd= the situation is divine and mystic. It is holiness.
It is a sign of respect not to cover your head. The idea of not covering one’s head is a sign of holiness. It is a heavenly image- divine although she is only a lady looking at the mirror. There is nothing heavenly, nothing holy. It is more or less silly if we try to compare it to the setting he is trying to suggest. The image that is suggested to our mind is of a holy setting in a church. As if we are in front of the altar. This person is nothing but an obedient, Christian scarifying to his God. This is the image suggested to our mind through the language and the situation described. The actual situation, setting is of a mantel. The language used suggests more than this.
He is describing a falcon, a giant bird flying. Something holy and great is suggested to our mind. The language used suggests a situation completely opposite to what is actually presented. It is exaggeration in details. It is the seriousness, the high elevated language produced that suggests to our mind that it is not an actual mantel. The language used suggests to our mind that the situation is more holy, more serious than the triviality of putting makeup. It suggests to our mind a wholly action that is usually taken in the church.
125 A heav'nly image in the glass appears,
126 To that she bends, to that her eyes she rears;
127 Th' inferior priestess, at her altar's side,
128 Trembling, begins the sacred rites of pride.

The image is clear. He is referring to the priestess. The priestess here is nothing but her housemaid, her assistant standing at the back. She is worried, trembling, shacking. She is making sure that everyone is okay.
He is inviting the reader, suggesting strongly to his mind to think of the trivialness in the society when it is compared to seriousness, to the dangers that their nation is facing. They are in a need for more seriousness to cultivate their life, to end clashes, to support the whole nation. This is the main issue of the epic. His main interest is in nation and different societies in the nation. There are certain satirical notes. Ladies at that time were accused of giving too much care for their appearance in an attempt to catch a husband. This is the triviality of the society of being very keen on beautifying one’s appearance forgetting about beautifying their souls, their spirits. He is criticizing Britain. Belinda stands for Britain itself. He is satirizing England for clashes, civil war, for the triviality of the society, colonizing other countries, raping others’ wealth and resources.
Rites= ritualsطقوس = scared rituals in the church.
It is the rites of this lady in her dressing room in front of her mental.
He is dealing with putting makeup as being rituals, scared rituals .
129 Unnumber'd treasures ope at once, and here
130 The various off'rings of the world appear;
131 From each she nicely culls with curious toil,
132 And decks the goddess with the glitt'ring spoil.
133 This casket India's glowing gems unlocks,
134 And all Arabia breathes from yonder box.
135 The tortoise here and elephant unite,
136 Transform'd to combs, the speckled and the white.
137 Here files of pins extend their shining rows,
138 Puffs, powders, *****es, bibles, billet-doux.

She has gems from India. She has perfumes from Arabia. She has the ivory of an elephant and the shell of a tortoise. They are transformed to combs. Her combs are made of ivory and of the shell of a tortoise.
He is satirizing his own country, his own nation for stealing the wealth of others and transforms it into nonsense. It is also a crime against environment. These species are being endangered. He is reefing to ecology= something that is in defense for the environment. They are killing these animals for nonsense. They are endangering their society with this nonsense, silliness, triviality. They are stealing other’s wealth. They are endangering the environment.
There are bibles among the cosmetics, combs, pins, powders. It is a sign of not respecting the bible. We are shocked to find the bible among these things.
She has all the equipment to beautify herself. She is neglecting the bible. She is beautifying her outer appearance, surface, forgetting to beautify her inner self.

139 Now awful beauty puts on all its arms;
140 The fair each moment rises in her charms,
141 Repairs her smiles, awakens ev'ry grace,
142 And calls forth all the wonders of her face;.

awful beauty= it is ironical, how beauty can be awful. It is the exaggeration in putting makeup that makes it awful beauty, not nice, not feminine, not desired. It is because it is only the beauty of the appearance.
This line is directly mentioned after the line where the bible is mentioned.
Her files of pins extend like soldiers in rows. They are ready to leave the battle field.
We start with a heavenly like situation with a lady at her mantel putting makeup as if she is fulfilling some ritual steps. It ends up with her activity similar to, referring at as being marching to a battle field. She is preparing herself to go to a battle field. Her war, her battle is to meet her lover.
The whole situation, the core of it, the reality is silliness. This silliness has been there by the use of elevated language.
The purpose of the writer is to satirize, helping people to correct their mistakes , to go back to their values, to alert them to be aware of the dangers that are threatening their morality, the morality of the society.
We find all the elements that we can speak of satirically.
The situation can be described as a trivial situation approached, written in an elevated language, touching upon all the defects , religious, values, political- speaking of England.
She is hypocrite. This is the hypocrisy of the society. Her smile is not honest. She is trying to smile . Repairs her smiles- her smile is not honest.

It is an epic. It is written by John Milton. Milton’s age is an age during which England enjoyed the absence of monarchy. It was a 14 year of political vacancy. There was no monarch. The Parliament was ruling the country. Oliver Cromwell was at the top of the Parliament. John Milton was a secretary for Cromwell. He was aware of the details, political, social, and religious of the country. He was in charge of a number of missions for his country. He was of enough knowledge, enough information of the country. He was interested in the welfare of his own country. He was a highly educated person, having an access to different languages, cultures. He was a book worm, reading a lot. He was a highly knowledgeable person. This is a credit for him to write an epic. When he is to deal with the issues of his country, he was keen enough to look at it as being human issues. What were going on in England for him were human issues. Similar to the first fall of Adam and Eve, so, he wrote a classical epic.
An epic is a long narrative poem that deals with the nation’s history. There should be a number of titles, positions, places that are related to the country.
With Paradise Lost, we have two levels, the apparent one is religious. It is Adam’s and Eve story. The first sin that has been committed by them caused their dismissal from paradise. The other level is political and social. This Eden from which they had been dismissed is England that is threatened with a real foe. They were threatened with a big loss of England if they keep on clashing, fighting, if they continue neglecting religion, social codes, values and morals. It is a real epic. It is not only about the history of the nation, it is about the history of humanity in general.
It covers not only the history of one nation, but the history of humanity in general.
As any epic, it is written in a highly elevated language. The introductory line is typical epic introduction. He is speaking of his own task as a writer. He is giving a statement of what is the topic about, introducing the topic, the main subject, dealing with the theme.
Here, he is asking the help of the Muse- the god of poetry.
OF Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal tast

It is an introductory sentence describing his topic. He is writing about Man’s first disobedience, his first sin which caused him to fall from Paradise. It is a real biblical story.
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater Man
Restore us, and regain the blissful Seat, [ 5 ]

one greater Man Restore us= Jesus – Christ

The introductory line highly suggests to our mind that is a clear reference to the real story of Adam and Eve in the bible.
He is speaking about man’s disobedience to God.
The British people are to continue clashing and showing hatred and enmity against each other, they will lose England. England is an Eden on earth.
He is speaking about the possibility of forgiveness. This is true religion.
Then, he is seeking help from the Muse.
Sing Heav'nly Muse, that on the secret top
Of Oreb, or of Sinai, didst inspire
That Shepherd, who first taught the chosen Seed,
In the Beginning how the Heav'ns and Earth
Rose out of Chaos: Or if Sion Hill [ 10 ]

He is asking this knowledge of the Muse who has been able to inspire a number of great men. One of these great men is Moses.
He gives a list of a number of holy places that have great influence on the history of a great nation, those who had changed through religion. One of his approach is religious, biblical.
He is speaking of the inspiration that is known from old days, through history. The Muse is closer to god. He has some kind of access to such holy places.
This is the third issue. The first is the subject matter. Then, he referred to Jesus the only hope for salvation for these simple people. Then, he speaks of the Muse and holy places where the Muse used to give inspiration.

Delight thee more, and Siloa's Brook that flow'd
Fast by the Oracle of God; I thence
Invoke thy aid to my adventrous Song,
That with no middle flight intends to soar
Above th' Aonian Mount, while it pursues [ 15 ]
Things unattempted yet in Prose or Rhime.
And chiefly Thou O Spirit, that dost prefer
Before all Temples th' upright heart and pure,
Instruct me, for Thou know'st; Thou from the first
Wast present, and with mighty wings outspread [ 20 ]
Dove-like satst brooding on the vast Abyss
And mad'st it pregnant: What in me is dark
Illumin, what is low raise and support;
That to the highth of this great Argument
I may assert Eternal Providence, [ 25 ]
And justifie the wayes of God to men.

He is speaking of famous lines justify ways of God to man. This is the theme: guilt and retribution. This is ways of God. سنن الله فى خلقه the punishment is a step for forgiveness, for salvation. Retribution is a step towards salvation and forgiveness.
The theme deals with the first human fall which caused the loss of heaven and to show the ways of God to man.
A new stanza speaks of who is responsible for the first sin- is it Adam, Eve, Satan. Adam and Eve are liable to be seduced. He speaks of the snake sent to seduce Eve to eat from the forbidden tree.
The political treatment of this part is a typical way of approaching policy. The language is high elevated. It is serious. It is dealing with the history of the nation.

The place setting is heaven and hell
Three major characters: Adam- Eve- Satan
Satan is the most powerful character ever designed by a writer. All critics show admiration for his character, how it is perfectly drawn and described by Milton. He is well designed to be fit for his role, seducing, cheating, pushing Adam and Eve to commit the first sin. He was smart, tricky. He was able to disguise, to take different appearance on of these is the snake. He is trying to seduce Adam and Eve. He is a dynamic character. He is wonderfully drawn, attractive. He is making, creating the events. He is speak able, very good in speaking. He is a very deductive kind of evil. He is arrogant. He refused to obey man as God ordered him. He promised to dismiss Man from heaven. He is charismatic.
The second hero is Eve. She is emotional, loving. This is one of the weakness in her that is approached by Satan. She loves Adam but she always pushes him for more knowledge, more profit. When she is alone, she is always approached by Satan seducing her.
Adam is the third character. He is the honest, innocent, humble, logic, enjoying some wisdom. Satan approached him thorough Eve who has some influence on him.
We have Satan with his disciple setting around a burning lake.
The umbrella setting is heaven, Adam and Eve with Satan trying to seduce them. There are other settings. We find one of them at the end of the first Canto- where Satan setting around a burning lake. They are planning of the downfall of Adam and all the Mankind.
He is warning against political clashes, loss of religion, going away from the church, not obeying God. It will cause another downfall of the British people and social cooperation, unity that is another threat to England at that time. Politics has no moral, no values.
Say first, for Heav'n hides nothing from thy view
Nor the deep Tract of Hell, say first what cause
Mov'd our Grand Parents in that happy State,
Favour'd of Heav'n so highly, to fall off [ 30 ]
From thir Creator, and transgress his Will
For one restraint, Lords of the World besides?
Who first seduc'd them to that foul revolt?
Th' infernal Serpent; he it was, whose guile
Stird up with Envy and Revenge, deceiv'd [ 35 ]
The Mother of Mankind, what time his Pride
Had cast him out from Heav'n, with all his Host
Of Rebel Angels, by whose aid aspiring
To set himself in Glory above his Peers,
He trusted to have equal'd the most High, [ 40 ]
If he oppos'd; and with ambitious aim
Against the Throne and Monarchy of God
Rais'd impious War in Heav'n and Battel proud
With vain attempt. Him the Almighty Power
Hurld headlong flaming from th' Ethereal Skie [ 45 ]
With hideous ruine and combustion down
To bottomless perdition, there to dwell
In Adamantine Chains and penal Fire,
Who durst defie th' Omnipotent to Arms.
Nine times the Space that measures Day and Night [ 50 ]
