Types of sentences

There are three main types of sentence.
• A simple sentence.
• A compound sentence.
• A complex sentence

The Simple Sentence

The simple sentence can be very short, consisting of a simple subject and a simple predicate.
The simple sentence can have a compound subject and a compound predicate.
The simple sentence can be declarative or interrogative
A simple sentence can be an exclamation or an imperative
A simple sentence can have a verb in any tense (past, present, or future):

The Compound Sentence

A compound sentence is two simple sentences connected by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.
Compound sentences with Coordinating Conjunctions & Conjunctive Adverbs

The Complex Sentence

A complex sentence has one independent clause and one (or more) dependent clauses.

What is a clause? A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. (= simple sentence)
There are two kinds of clauses in English:
An independent clause has one subject –verb pair and expresses a complete thought. (It is just another
name for a simple sentence)
A dependent clause is an independent clause with a subordinating conjunction

A dependent clause does NOT express a complete thought, so it is NOT a sentence by itself. It is only a fragment. It MUST be joined to an independent clause. The result is a complex sentence.
