Characters:Viola
A young woman of aristocratic birth, and the play’s protagonist. Washed up on the shore of Illyria when her ship is wrecked in a storm, Viola decides to make her own way in the world. She disguises herself as a young man, calling herself “Cesario,” and becomes a page to Duke Orsino. She ends up falling in love with Orsino—even as Olivia, the woman Orsino is courting, falls in love with Cesario. Thus, Viola finds that her clever disguise has entrapped her: she cannot tell Orsino that she loves him, and she cannot tell Olivia why she, as Cesario, cannot love her. Viola’s poignant plight is the central conflict in the play.
Orsino
A powerful nobleman in the country of Illyria. Orsino is lovesick for the beautiful Lady Olivia, but finds himself becoming more and more fond of his handsome new page boy, Cesario, who is actually a woman—Viola. Orsino is a vehicle through whom Shakespeare explores the absurdity of love. A supreme egotist, Orsino mopes around complaining how heartsick he is over Olivia, when it is clear that he is chiefly in love with the idea of being in love and enjoys making a spectacle of himself.
Olivia
A wealthy, beautiful, and noble Illyrian lady. Olivia is courted by Orsino and Sir Andrew Aguecheek, but to each of them she insists that she is in mourning for her recently deceased brother and will not marry for seven years. Olivia and Orsino are similar characters in that each seems to enjoy wallowing in his or her own misery. Viola’s arrival in the masculine guise of Cesario enables Olivia to break free of her self-indulgent melancholy.
Sebastian
Viola’s lost twin brother. When Sebastian arrives in Illyria, traveling with Antonio, his close friend and protector, he discovers that many people seem to think that they know him. Furthermore, the beautiful Lady Olivia, whom Sebastian has never met, wants to marry him.
Malvolio
The straitlaced steward—or head servant—in the household of Lady Olivia. Malvolio is very efficient but also very self-righteous, and he has a poor opinion of drinking, singing, and fun. His priggishness and haughty attitude earn him the enmity of Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, and Maria, who play a cruel trick on him, making him believe that Olivia is in love with him. In his fantasies about marrying his mistress, Malvolio reveals a powerful ambition to rise above his social class.
Fool
The clown, or court jester, of Olivia’s household. The Fool, also known as Feste, moves between Olivia’s and Orsino’s homes, earning his living by making pointed jokes, singing old songs, being generally witty, and offering good advice cloaked under a layer of foolishness. In spite of being a professional fool, Feste often seems the wisest character in the play.
Sir Toby Belch
Olivia’s uncle. Olivia lets Sir Toby live with her but does not approve of his rowdy behavior, practical jokes, heavy drinking, late-night carousing, or friends (specifically the idiotic Sir Andrew). But Sir Toby has an ally—and eventually a mate—in Olivia’s sharp-witted serving-woman, Maria. Together, they bring about the triumph of fun and disorder, which Sir Toby embodies, and the humiliation of the controlling, self-righteous Malvolio.
Maria
Olivia’s clever, daring young serving-woman. Maria is remarkably similar to her antagonist, Malvolio, who harbors aspirations of rising in the world through marriage. However, Maria succeeds where Malvolio fails—perhaps because she is more in tune than Malvolio with the anarchic, topsy-turvy spirit that animates the play.
Sir Andrew
A friend of Sir Toby’s. Sir Andrew Aguecheek attempts to court Olivia, but he doesn’t stand a chance. He thinks that he is witty, brave, young, and good at languages and dancing, but he is actually a complete idiot.
Antonio
A man who rescues Sebastian after his shipwreck. Antonio has become very fond of Sebastian, caring for him, accompanying him to Illyria, and furnishing him with money—all because of a love so strong that it seems to be romantic in nature. When the principal characters marry at the end of the play, Antonio is left out, his love for Sebastian unrequited.
Valentine and Curio
Two gentlemen who work for Duke Orsino.
Fabian
A servant in Olivia’s household. He assists Maria and Sir Toby in their plot to humiliate Malvolio.
Captain
The sea captain who rescues Viola after the shipwreck. He helps Viola become a page to Duke Orsino and keeps her identity a secret.

Lecture No 9
Twelfth Night is a transitive comedy it depends on change of gender. Comedy in sixteenth century was a festival celebration in land in the time of Elizabeth. As we know Elizabeth produces such drama. Before and after the Elizabeth people were so much destroyed, unhappy. When Elizabeth comes to throne she changes the drama. The time when Shakespeare was born and became very famous due to he got the time of Elizabeth .he wrote the comedy what he was feeling at that time.
There was a new – found reoccupation with classical literature and art. Shakespeare, s comedy has some entertainment, we see humor and laughter, and clown.
Act 1
Scene 1(a room in the duke's palace) page 5 line 5
The first act starts with Orsino the duke of Illyria expresses his love for Olivia and Viola comes to Illyria.
Viola disguises as a servant of Orsino and becomes favorite friend of Orsino. Before Viola, Orsino used Valentine and Curio as messengers to Olivia, but now he sends Viola to Olivia. If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
That strain again! it had a dying fall:
O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound,
That breathes upon a bank of violets,
Stealing and giving odour! Enough; no more:
'Tis not so sweet now as it was before.
O spirit of love! how quick and fresh art thou,
That, notwithstanding thy capacity
Receiveth as the sea, nought enters there,
Of what validity and pitch soe'er,
But falls into abatement and low price,
Even in a minute: so full of shapes is fancy
That it alone is high fantastical.

- In this lines Orsino is comparing that music which is the food of love is should be played, Orsino is rejected by Olivia and he wants to increase his love and this love in increased by music. He always expresses his love toward Olivia, dramatically he said (play on). He likes to eat too much when he so hungry he relax. The appetite maybe sick and so die. Again when there is appetite for food there is appetite for music. This is a point that it is a play of music.
Music should come to his ears as a sweet sound; it should com like a rose & perfume. The sound of music is not beautiful like before. He is recalling his love which gives him freshness. He is focusing on the validity of music.
Orsino expresses that this music should be played so much, and his love will be in full gloom. If music is not played his love will decrease
- Hart means dear a symbol of love.
- Valentine gives orsino a message from Olivia that she will veil herself for seven years .she will not come out of her room and will not see her face to any male ,due to the
- sudden death of her brother .she wants to keep the memory of her dead brother
- The Duke decides that he will continue to pursue her.
- Act I. Scene II. - The Sea-coast.
Viola, s brother was lost at sea but may not be dead. Viola learns from the Captain of their doomed ship that they are now in Illyria, which is ruled by Orsino. She Viola remembers this name; her father spoke it many years before. She also remembers that "He [Orsino] was a bachelor then and the Captain confirms this to still to be the case.
But the captain tells viola that the duke is seeking the love of Olivia. But Olivia refuses to marry him because she is mourning the death of her father, and recently, her brother.
Viola, fearing her own brother lost, identifies with Olivia and resolves to serve her. We learn from the Captain however, that this will be impossible; she "will not meet any one not even the Duke. Viola, now disguised as a man, as a eunuch to the Duke.
Viola wants to help Olivia because they both suffer the same sorrow the death of their brothers. Viola with the help of the captain disguises as a man, the servant of orsino
Act I. Scene III. - A Room in Olivia's House...
Here we meet Olivia and her servant Maria
Sir Toby, Olivia's cousin is introduced. We quickly discover that he drinks a great deal, keeps late hours and is generally rowdy by nature. Maria, Lady Olivia's maid makes this clear to us in her unsuccessful attempts to quieted Sir Toby down. Maria also reveals Olivia's annoyance that Sir Toby has encouraged Sir Andrew Aguecheek to court her.
Andrew is bought to Olivia's house .he so rich, but Maria describes him as foolish.
Sir Toby is a good joker, he talks and joke with Andrew like all friends.
Andrew wants to marry Olivia. Realizing Olivia will not be courted by him, Sir Andrew makes preparations to leave but Sir Toby convinces Sir Andrew to stay a month longer, no doubt so Sir Toby can use Sir An Andrew and his great wealth further...
Shakespeare uses the aspects of humorous comedy .he uses humor and laughter withers in his comedy or tragedy.
In the society we have to mention our status, but in the estate the characters are free to express their roles. Here, he describes the idea of class of people .Olivia does not want to marry to the high class people.

Act I. Scene IV. - A Room in the Duke's Palace
Viola has successfully disguised herself as a man named Cesario. Her success with Orsino has been so great that she or rather "He" is now a favorite with Orsino who believes Viola to be the man named Cesario. As such, Orsino entrusts Cesario (Viola) to convey his love for Olivia.
When valentine used to go to Olivia he was not perfect, but Cesario is good and perfect in his duty.
When Cesario asks what he should say if he gets Olivia's attention, The Duke replies to Cesario (Viola) that he should express the Duke's feelings to her.
Cesario's pleasing appearance should help his cause. Cesario should come with acceptance not refusal.
Orsino describes Olivia's figures. We now learn of the strength of Cesario's (Viola's) love f or Orsino
.p.g.25 line 40 (to woo your ------ his wife).
Viola
I will do my best
To woo your lady . ( Aside ) yet , a barful strife .
Whoe , er I woo , myself would be his wife .
Olivia says she want to be Orisno's wife she is expressing that she falls in Orsino,s love , but Orsino doesn’t know her reality as a woman .
Act I. Scene V. – A Room in Olivia's house 7

Olivia gives us an insight into Malvolio's character by saying that he suffers from self-love or is arrogant and vain. Cesario petitions Lady Olivia, eventually gaining her audience. Lady Olivia is quite taken by Cesario but tells him, she cannot return Orison's affections for her.
P.g.45 line 235
(Your lord ------------long ago.)
OLIVIA
Your lord does know my mind; I cannot love him:
Yet I suppose him virtuous, know him noble,
Of great estate, of fresh and stainless youth;
In voices well divulged, free, learn'd and valiant;
And in dimension and the shape of nature
A gracious person: but yet I cannot love him;
He might have took his answer long ago.

viola
If I did love you in my master's flame,
With such a suffering, such a deadly life,
In your denial I would find no sense;
I would not understand it.

Lady Olivia, eventually gaining her audience. Olivia is quite taken by Cesario but tells him, she cannot return Orison's affections for her. Viola tells Olivia that orsino loves you too much, and he praises here.
Olivia says that orsino is virtues and noble of a great estate but she cannot love him.
She describes that so many times before.
Viola asks about the reason of this refusal.
Olivia would however like to see Cesario (Viola) again, asking him to come back to report to her how Orsino took the news.
Intrigued by Cesario, Olivia sends Malvolio after him to give back a ring Cesario left behind as an excuse to express her affection for him.

Lecture 10
Act II. Scene I. - The Sea-coast.

We came across new characters Sebastian and Antonio.
After the ship was destroyed by a heavy storm Antonio saves the life of Sebastian and Viola , is saved by the captain of the sea .
Sebastian, the twin brother Viola feared had died at sea has also survived their shipwreck. Like Viola he mourns the loss of his sibling, believing his sister Viola to be dead.

Antonio loves Sebastian so much but Sebastian refuses to stay in Antonio's house . they reach to Illyria .
Antonio cant travel to Illyria because he has enemies there .
Antonio, the man who saved Sebastian's life is touched by Sebastian's loss and resolves to follow Sebastian to the Duke of Orsino's court even though he has many enemies there.
P.g 51 line 21
SEBASTIAN
A lady, sir, though it was said she much resembled
me, was yet of many accounted beautiful: but,
though I could not with such estimable wonder
overfar believe that, yet thus far I will boldly
publish her; she bore a mind that envy could not but
call fair. She is drowned already, sir, with salt
water, though I seem to drown her remembrance again with more.
Her Sebastian describing the beauty of his sister , she is so much resembling him , they are so much alike from foot to head and he remember that she is drowned in the sea .
He is alone, he is alone after the death of his father ,he understands that his sister has been drawned.
Act II. Scene II. - A Street.
Malvolio catches up with Cesario, rudely returning Cesario's (Viola's) ring to him. Cesario is confused, he left no such ring at Lady Olivia's house.
Malvolio comes with the ring from the house of Olivia .But in fact Olivia sends the ring to make Cesario returns to her house.
p.g 55 line 15
VIOLA
I left no ring with her: what means this lady?
Fortune forbid my outside have not charm'd her!
She made good view of me; indeed, so much,
That sure methought her eyes had lost her tongue,
For she did speak in starts distractedly.
She loves me, sure; the cunning of her passion
Invites me in this churlish messenger.
None of my lord's ring! why, he sent her none.
I am the man: if it be so, as 'tis,
Poor lady, she were better love a dream.
Disguise,
Olivia thinks that the eyes of Olivia don’t tell the right words , this is the feeling of Viola , she might be in love . this is not my ring , I am the man but I am not true man , I disguise what I have done . I play a trick .
Viola expresses her hope that time will untangle these problems since she certainly cannot figure out how to solve them.

Act II. Scene III. - A Room in Olivia's House
Sir Toby makes noise all the night , he drinks a lot , they request from the servant to sing a song .
Mr Andrew drinks , talks and jokes , Maria critics Sir Toby and Andrew because they are drinking all the night . their behavior is not responsible .
This gets Maria's attention who warns all three men to quite down lest Malvolio notices.
p.g 63 line 82
MALVOLIO
Sir Toby, I must be round with you. My lady bade me
tell you, that, though she harbours you as her
kinsman, she's nothing allied to your disorders. If
you can separate yourself and your misdemeanors, you
are welcome to the house; if not, an it would please
you to take leave of her, she is very willing to bid
you farewell.
Here Malvolio is presented as a difficult character in the drama.
He tells Sir Toby that if Olivia know , she will not keep him in her house he speaks in rude way , that annoys Sir Toby and Andrew . After making a final threat, this one directed at Maria, Malvolio leaves, warning them all that he will let Olivia know about their behavior.
They plan to play a trick on Malvolio .

Act II. Scene IV. - A Room in the Duke's Palace.
DUKE ORSINO
Give me some music. Now, good morrow, friends.
Now, good Cesario, but that piece of song,
That old and antique song we heard last night:
Methought it did relieve my passion much,
More than light airs and recollected terms
Of these most brisk and giddy-paced times:
Come, but one verse.
In this lines there is the topic of love and music .
The drama starts with a song of love and Orsino says that music is the feed of love here Cesario is discussing with Orsino about music , he suggests that Cesario must be in love with someone .
Viola is in love of Orsino but he does not understand the remark .
When the Duke gets negative response from Olivia he focuses on music , he asks to repeat the song of the last night .
This song reliefs him so much from passion . the music will give a pleasant atmosphere .
Here there are other evidence on the song in the drama
p.g 77 line 84
VIOLA
Sooth, but you must.
Say that some lady, as perhaps there is,
Hath for your love a great a pang of heart
As you have for Olivia: you cannot love her;
You tell her so; must she not then be answer'd?
Orsino sends Cesario once more to Lady Olivia with a large jewel as a token of his love for her .
The Duke loves Olivia so much he sends Orsino to express his love , but Viola refuses to answer , when Viola returns from the house of Olivia she told him that you cannot love her , Olivia refuses to answer.

Act II. Scene V. - Olivia's Garden.
Fabian is a servant in Olivia's house .
Maria decides to play a practical joke on Malvolio .
Maria writes a letter carefully designed to trick Malvolio . she tells him that Olivia is in love with him . she dropped the letter in the garden that Malvolio might see it .
Malvolio, meanwhile having not yet found the letter, starts entertaining the idea that Olivia could love him and that he could marry her.
Malvolio picks up Maria's counterfeit letter with its instructions that Malvolio be rude to kinsman like Sir Toby. It also suggests that he wear yellow stockings and be cross-gartered to win Olivia's love.
He likes to be Olivia,s husband and the master of her house . he could have the power over other servant and Sir Toby because he always jokes on Molvolio from the beginning of the drama .

Act III.
Act III. Scene I.- Olivia's Garden
Cesario has another private meeting with Lady Olivia on Duke Orsino's behalf. Sir Toby and Sir Andrew meet Cesario and Sir Toby learns from Cesario that he will soon speak with Olivia.
When Cesario comes in the house , he meets Feste who makes so much jokes .
Andrew meets Cesario for the first time , he behaves foolishly because he drinks a lot .
Cesario enters the house and Olivia comes down with Maria . she asks everybody to leave the place .
p.g 103 line 100

OLIVIA
O, by your leave, I pray you,
I bade you never speak again of him:
But, would you undertake another suit,
I had rather hear you to solicit that
Than music from the spheres
.
Olivia asks Cesaerio not to give any message from Orsino but Olivia wants him to come again . here Viola is so much confused because she understood that Olivia falls in her love .

OLIVIA
Yet come again; for thou perhaps mayst move
That heart, which now abhors, to like his love.
In private, Olivia admits to Cesario that she used the ring she sent after him to lure him back to her. Cesario tries to put Olivia off him but she is smitten, ignoring all Cesario's attempts to diminish her enthusiasm for him .

Act III. Scene II. - A Room in Olivia's House.

Sir Andrew told Sir Toby that he has decided to leave the house because he understands that Olivia will not marry him but Sir Toby wants to keep Andrew around because he wants to get his money .
Fabian also tries to persuade Andrew that Olivia will become one day his wife .
Sir Toby and Fabian manipulate Sir Andrew into writing a challenge to the youth (Cesario) even though they know a fight between the two cowards (Cesario and Sir Andrew) is unlikely. Summary

Antonio decides to move with Sebastian in Illyria .he allows Sebastian to move in Illyria, and he stays in the
Guests house (Elephant).Sebastian is moving in front of Olivia's house .Andrew and Sir Toby are ready to fight with him, they think that he Cesario.
In the Elizabeth time there was a system of fighting; two people fight in the street.
When Andrew comes to see Sebastian, he sticks him to makes Sebastian also sticks him. When Sebastian sees Sir Toby and Andrew he confused, he says that all people are mad in Illyria .but this people fight him because they think that he is Cesario.Sebastian is a nervous person who is so much ready to fight. He draws his sword, he sees that he is alone and there is so much people .Olivia comes and tells sir Toby not to fight with this person .she thinks Sebastian to be Cesario. She wants to talk with Sebastian considering him to be Cesario.
-Sebastian is so much confused because he is UN able to understand the scene.
And because Olivia is so much beautiful, and after some time she offers him to marry her.
But Sebastian, without thinking, is ready to marry Olivia; they both go to the temple and marry. They will not declare their marriage until they find suitable time.
-the mistaken identity is important theme in the drama.
-we also see Orison and viola come to request Olivia for love and marriage with
Orison .Antonio is captured by some officers of Orison .when orison sees Antonio he asks him how he dares to come to Illyria. Antonio says that he saved viola's life considering her to be Sebastian. Here Orison becomes angrier because orison is serving him.
Viola is so confused .Antonio comes and blames viola considering her to be Sebastian.
Viola and Olivia are confused because Olivia said that viola (cession) is her husband, and viola said that she does not know anything about this .Orison is confused, he blames Cesario because he steals his love .here appears Sebastian, the confusion arrives to its climax .Orison sees that there are two persons with one voice and face .Sebastian expresses that has married Olivia.
Sebastian expresses that he comes here because Sebastian has saved his life .Sebastian is confused when seeing Cesario because he has no brother, he has one sister .after sometime Viola understands the reality that she is the real sister of Sebastian, but she disguised .Viola expresses her love to Orison .Olivia orders that viola and orison should marry in her house.
The confusion was cleared by the statement of viola.
-the mistaken identity arises with violas disguises as a man.
-Viola falls in love with Orison as a woman.
-Olivia refuses to marry Orison .she falls in love with Cesario and she gets marry to Sebastian.

Act 4 Twelfth Night
SIR ANDREW
Now, sir, have I met you again? There's for you
Andrew is bought by sir Toby to marry Olivia .he describes Andrew as a best dancer and best singer .Toby thinks that Andrew is fitting to the character of Olivia, and Andrew sees that Olivia must be in love with Cesario.
Toby blames Andrew and encourages him to fight Cesario.
Andrew does not get the chance to fight Cesario.
Andrew strikes Sebastian .Sebastian draws his sword, here Olivia comes. When she sees Sir Toby and Andrew are fighting with Sebastian, she orders them to stop.
OLIVIA
Hold, Toby; on thy life I charge thee, holds!

SIR TOBY BELCH
Madam!

OLIVIA
Will it be ever thus? Ungracious wretch,
Fit for the mountains and the barbarous caves,
Where manners ne'er were preach'd! hout of my sight!
She is describing that those people can't talk with him, she critics this misbehavior as people living in her house. She orders them to leave.
SEBASTIAN
What relish is in this? How runs the stream?
Or I am mad, or else this is a dream:
Let fancy still my sense in Lethe steep;
If it be thus to dream, still let me sleep!
When Sebastian sees the behavior of Olivia, he thinks that he is dreaming. This is the fancy of love.
Lethe is a name of a river in Greek mythology of forgetting, souls have to cross above this river before entering the underground.
Love fancy is still my sense and if this dream he should continue his sleeping. In the behavior of Olivia, Sebastian makes his speech, he wants to forget all things and complete his dream.
SCENE III. OLIVIA's garden.

Enter SEBASTIAN

SEBASTIAN
This is the air; that is the glorious sun;
This pearl she gave me, I do feel't and see't;
And though 'tis wonder that enwraps me thus,
Yet 'tis not madness. Where's Antonio, then?
I could not find him at the Elephant:
Yet there he was; and there I found this credit,
That he did range the town to seek me out.
His counsel now might do me golden service;
For though my soul disputes well with my sense,
That this may be some error, but no madness,
Yet doth this accident and flood of fortune
Sebastian's soul gets a hot sense but it is not an error, this love not madness. He expresses the gratitude he gets from Antonio, he is so happy, and when he sees the pearl he remembers Antonio.
When Antonio meets Cesario and Andrew, Cesario does not know Antonio, but Andrew considers Cesario to be Sebastian
OLIVIA
Blame not this haste of mine. If you mean well,
Now go with me and with this holy man
Into the chantry by: there, before him,
And underneath that consecrated roof,
Plight me the full assurance of your faith;
That my most jealous and too doubtful soul
May live at peace. He shall conceal it
Whiles you are willing it shall come to note,
What time we will our celebration keep
According to my birth. What do you say?
Olivia is trying to get married in the temple, she blames for so much hate, she should go with him. Under the secret roof of the temple they marry.
Her soul which is doubtful should be in peace, he must not speak to anybody; they want to keep their marriage celebration for a suitable time which will be the date of birth of Olivia.
Act 4 Twelfth Night
- The final discovery of every event
- Antonio was bought by the officers of Orsino
VIOLA
He did me kindness, sir, drew on my side;
But in conclusion put strange speech upon me:
I know not what 'twas but distraction.

DUKE ORSINO
Notable pirate! thou salt-water thief!
What foolish boldness brought thee to their mercies,
Whom thou, in terms so bloody and so dear,
Hast made thine enemies?

When the duke sees Antonio he wonders what makes him dare to come to Illyria.
Andrew is the enemy of the Duke
OLIVIA
What would my lord, but that he may not have,
Wherein Olivia may seem serviceable?
Cesario, you do not keep promise with me.
The Duke and Viola are talking and the Duke is talking with Antonio.
Olivia sees Cesario and she asks, what had happened with her Lord?
She is waiting for Sebastian; she sees Cesario and considers him to be Sebastian.
VIOLA
And I, most jocund, apt and willingly,
To do you rest, a thousand deaths would die.
Viola is responding to Olivia.
I love to be the wife of Orsino.
SEBASTIAN
I am sorry, madam, I have hurt your kinsman:
But, had it been the brother of my blood,
I must have done no less with wit and safety.
You throw a strange regard upon me, and by that
I do perceive it hath offended you:
Pardon me, sweet one, even for the vows
We made each other but so late ago.

DUKE ORSINO
One face, one voice, one habit, and two persons,
A natural perspective, that is and is not!
Here Sebastian speaks with Olivia, he didn’t harm any person, and if they are your relatives, Toby and Andrew, I will apologize to you sweet Olivia.
-these are destroyed lines .by seeing Sebastian, all characters Olivia, viola, duke, Orsino, sir Toby and Andrew are confused.
Two persons are made by nature .it is just to create fantastic effect .one face one body one voice in two persons, it is a node.
SEBASTIAN
Antonio, O my dear Antonio!
How have the hours rack'd and tortured me,
Since I have lost thee!
Sebastian is speaking with Antonio, he tells him how much he tortured since he meets Antonio.
VIOLA
If nothing lets to make us happy both
But this my masculine usurp'd attire,
Do not embrace me till each circumstance
Of place, time, fortune, do cohere and jump
That I am Viola: which to confirm,
I'll bring you to a captain in this town,
Where lie my maiden weeds; by whose gentle help
I was preserved to serve this noble count.
All the occurrence of my fortune since
Hath been between this lady and this lord.

I am happy, do not look for this place, time, fortune I am real Olivia, the captain brought me and he is in this town
She was preserved to serve orsino, the noble man .all my fortune was between this lady and that lord.
OLIVIA
Alas, Malvolio, this is not my writing,
Though, I confess, much like the character
But out of question 'tis Maria's hand.
And now I do bethink

Re
Regarding to the letter, Malvolio dreams to become the husband of Olivia. Confusion has been cleared. Malvolia sees her letter .it is not her writing it is Maria's .she knows her character .Malvolio is very critical character, he creates so much laughter. Once he was steward in Olivia's house .He gets the letter, all characters consider him mad man. Olivia is so much ignorant of the letter .she always
In her died brother. Before seeing Orsino she decides not to show her face to anyone.
This is the power of love.
Critical analyses
The theme of love
Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy, and romantic love is the play’s main focus. Despite the fact that the play offers a happy ending.love causes suffering.
The love of the duke is not expressed directly; rather it is expressed by messengers. He sends messages of love to Olivia with valentine .but Olivia expresses to him that she can't marry him. She decides not to marry any other person for seven years .after deciding to veil herself, her decision is broken by the appearance of Cesario.
The confusion that has been created by the three to find one another and wedded bless Shakespeare said that love can combine , many of the character see love as a kind of sudden attack of feeling , these characters start to suffer painfully from love .
Orsino detects love, the appetite he wants to satisfy but he can't, he calls his desires.
Olivia describes love is a plague, Olivia suffers from love. We also see that love means to some people happiness and to the other suffering and sadness.
At the end of the play, as the happy lovers rejoice, both Malvolio and Antonio are prevented from having the objects of their desire. Malvolio, who has pursued Olivia, must ultimately face the realization that he is a fool.
Antonio is not allowed to express his love towards Sebastian.
Some critics said that he falls in love with Sebastian, others said that it is a kind of friendship.

The uncertainty of gender
Gender is one of most obvious and most discussed topic in this play, wither it is male or female.
This drama is transvestite comedy. It means that the main characters change their dress to another gender.
Viola is disguised as a man, her situation creates son many confusion. S he falls in love with Orsino but she can't tell him because she is a man.
When Olivia, the object of Orsino’s affection, falls for Viola in her guise as Cesario. There is a clear homoerotic sub**************** here: Olivia is in love with a woman, even if she thinks he is a man, and Orsino often remarks on Cesario’s beauty, suggesting that he is attracted to Viola even before her male disguise is removed. This latent homoeroticism finds an explicit echo in the minor character of Antonio, who is clearly in love with his male friend, Sebastian. But Antonio’s desires cannot be satisfied,
The Folly of Ambition
The problem of social ambition works itself out largely through the character of Malvolio, the steward, who seems to be a competent servant, if prudish and dour, but proves to be, in fact, a supreme egotist, with tremendous ambitions to rise out of his social class. Maria plays on these ambitions when she forges a letter from Olivia that makes Malvolio believe that Olivia is in love with him and wishes to marry him. Sir Toby and the others find this fantasy hysterically funny, of course—not only because of Malvolio’s unattractive personality but also because Malvolio is not of noble blood. In the class system of Shakespeare’s time, a noblewoman would generally not sully her reputation by marrying a man of lower social status.
Yet the atmosphere of the play may render Malvolio’s aspirations less unreasonable than they initially seem. The feast of Twelfth Night, from which the play takes its name, was a time when social hierarchies were turned upside down. That same spirit is alive in Illyria: indeed, Malvolio’s antagonist, Maria, is able to increase her social standing by marrying Sir Toby. But it seems that Maria’s success may be due to her willingness to accept and promote the anarchy that Sir Toby and the others embrace. This Twelfth Night spirit, then, seems to pass by Malvolio, who doesn’t wholeheartedly embrace the upending of order and decorum but rather wants to blur class lines for himself alone.

John Milton (Paradise Lost)
************************************************** *******
Last time we started Milton and we talked about the problems that faced him on writing this poem. As we said it's divided into different books and we have an argument in book one before the poem.
BOOK I
This first book proposes, first in brief, the whole subject: man's disobedience and the loss thereupon of Paradise wherein he was placed; then touches the prime cause of his fall, the serpent, or rather Satan in the serpent, who, revolting from God and drawing to his side many legions of angels, was by the command of God driven out of heaven with all his crew into the great deep. Which action past over, the poem hasts into the midst of things, presenting Satan with his angels now fallen into hell—described here, not in the center (for heaven and earth may be supposed as yet not made, certainly not yet accursed) but in a place of utter darkness, fitliest called chaos. Here Satan with his angels lying on the burning Lake, thunder-struck and astonished, after a certain space recovers, as from confusion; calls up him who, next in order and dignity, lay by him; they confer of thir miserable fall. Satan awakens all his legions, who lay till then in the same manner confounded. They rise; their numbers, array of battle, their chief leaders named, according to the idols known afterwards in Canaan and the countries adjoining. To these Satan directs his speech, comforts them with hope yet of regaining heaven, but tells them lastly of a new world and new kind of creature to be created, according to an ancient prophesy or report in heaven; for that angels were long before this visible creation, was the opinion of many ancient fathers. To find out the truth of this prophesy, and what to determine thereon, he refers to a full council; what his associates thence attempt. Pandemonium, the palace of Satan, rises, suddenly built out of the deep; the infernal peers there sit in counsil.

Book one speaks about the main subject which is man's disobedience to God and how Adam disobeyed God tempted by the serpent which is a snake and it is always linked to Satan or any person who is doing something wrong making anybody make a mistake, we say that he is like a serpent.
Here we have the main cause of the fall. Satan disobeyed God and God decided to send him out of heaven and Satan took with him some of his followers who are known as the fallen angels. He made a sort of army from those angels to fight man whom he considers the cause of punishment for Satan as he refused to bow to Adam. That's why he hated Adam and all his descendants and he decided to spend the time until Doomsday to fight man to make him disobey God and commit sins to go to hell with him.
Milton cannot present Satan in hell now because there is no hell or heaven, so instead he is describing him in a place of deep darkness a place called Chaos which means complete disorder. He uses his imagination. He imagined that Satan comes with his fallen angels like a defeated army and they are scattered around the lake.
Usually lakes in literature are parts of heaven and beautiful nature. But these are fallen angels who are supposed to be punished by God, so it is a lake of fire. They are like thunderstruck. They are burning and they are astonished. They were promised by Satan something. They followed him as man followed her for a promise good life, pleasure. This is what we call temptation like he tempted Adam and eve and that's why they are astonished.
They were exhausted coming back from battles lying down around this lake. So he comes and tries to encourage and revive them to continue fighting.
He started as a good leader and this is a human quality. He is trying to encourage his followers. He is trying to talk to the leaders showing to each one what he is going to do and how to perform it. He is promising them if you follow me, you will go to heaven again but before doing, so they should fight the new creature who has been born and settled in the new world which is man on earth.
He is telling them that this creature is new and you are created before him. In order to go to heaven he must be expelled from heaven. This is his argument. This creature is promised to go to heaven if he obeys. Satan says it's our chance to go to heaven again only if this creature is forbidden from going to heaven.
So this will be their job preventing them from going to heaven making him sinful and disobeying. In order to show his followers how to do, so he's going to have war against man. For this war he is going to make a council. The heads of his army are now sitting in the council in the place where Satan lives which is called Pandemonium and it is made of infernal. From there starts the poem.
Of Man's first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste
Brought death into the World, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater Man
Restore us, and regain the blissful seat,
Sing, Heavenly Muse, that, on the secret top
Of Oreb, or of Sinai, didst inspire
That shepherd who first taught the chosen seed
In the beginning how the heavens and earth
Rose out of Chaos: or, if Sion hill
Delight thee more, and Siloa's brook that flowed
Fast by the oracle of God, I thence
Invoke thy aid to my adventurous song,
That with no middle flight intends to soar
Above th' Aonian mount, while it pursues
Things unattempted yet in prose or rhyme.
And chiefly thou, O Spirit, that dost prefer
Before all temples th' upright heart and pure,
Instruct me, for thou know'st; thou from the first
Wast present, and, with mighty wings outspread,
Dove-like sat'st brooding on the vast Abyss,
And mad'st it pregnant: what in me is dark
Illumine, what is low raise and support;
That, to the height of this great argument,
I may assert Eternal Providence,
And justify the ways of God to men.
Milton Starts with the story of disobedience of man when he ate from the forbidden tree, this was his mistake that brought death into the world. In heaven he wouldn't have died.
Man is going to regain heaven if he obeys God and according to Christianity through the crucifixion of Christ who regained his feet back in heaven. So he is telling us the story and he refers to the story of creation.
In line 25
Milton is telling us what he's going to do in this poem and what is his intention in writing this poem.
I may assert Eternal Providence,
And justify the ways of God to men.
He is giving man assurance of the providence of god and he is telling man why and what are the reasons for god's ways why did God create man and why didn't he prevent him from committing a sin. He began with the story of Satan and how be tempted some of the fallen angels to follow him and how he came back to see them scattered around a lake and how he tries to make them rise again.
Remember the problem of having a tragic hero. In order to present Satan as a hero he is giving him heroic characteristics showing him as a great leader having great qualities he must be better than all his followers. He is presented as being taller than all and stronger he is showing us how he is a very huge creature able of leading his followers.
Line 270
So Satan spake; and him Beelzebub
Thus answered:--"Leader of those armies bright
Which, but th' Omnipotent, none could have foiled!
If once they hear that voice, their liveliest pledge
Of hope in fears and dangers--heard so oft
In worst extremes, and on the perilous edge
Of battle, when it raged, in all assaults
Their surest signal--they will soon resume
New courage and revive, though now they lie
Grovelling and prostrate on yon lake of fire,
As we erewhile, astounded and amazed;
No wonder, fallen such a pernicious height!"
He is addressing his followers and telling them how to regain heaven. Beelzebub is one of the heads of the army who tells Satan that if you speak to those fighters and then you’re your voice, they will revive again. If they hear your voice, they will have courage again.
Satan decided to talk to his defeated army and try to raise their low morals. Milton here is not going to describe how Satan looks because at that time they had a picture in their minds. Of course he doesn't want people to hate him at the beginning. He wants to present him as a hero and he cannot also lie and say that he is beautiful. So he is showing us the side that can be true that he is huge and strong which are characteristics that have nothing to do with being good or bad. He's giving us the characteristics of a leader who knows what to do and who is able to convince those fallen angels and many people to follow him.
I've chosen this part because it has many examples of how Milton makes use of the similes and the encyclopedic information. Here he is describing Satan as a leader which is something which was common at that that time.
He scare had ceased when the superior Fiend
Was moving toward the shore; his ponderous shield,
Ethereal temper, massy, large, and round,
Behind him cast. The broad circumference
Hung on his shoulders like the moon, whose orb
Through optic glass the Tuscan artist views
At evening, from the top of Fesole,
Or in Valdarno, to descry new lands,
Rivers, or mountains, in her spotty globe.
His spear--to equal which the tallest pine
Hewn on Norwegian hills, to be the mast
Of some great ammiral, were but a wand--
He walked with, to support uneasy steps
Over the burning marl, not like those steps
On Heaven's azure; and the torrid clime
Smote on him sore besides, vaulted with fire.
Nathless he so endured, till on the beach
Of that inflamed sea he stood, and called
The superior fiend means the great devil.
He is coming carrying his shield which is very large. Because the shield is huge, so Satan must be strong and huge. So Milton is not describing Satan himself but he's describing his things but we can use imagination to conclude. He is carrying this huge shield very easily.
Circumference means that this shield is appearing behind his back, it is hung on his shoulders like the moon. Moon and the stars are moving in orbits from the earth.
You can see the moon as a small round circle. At that time Galileo invented the telescope and they view that the moon was huge by a means of optic glasses. When they discovered the moon, they found that it's a full opening of volcanoes there were like spots on the moon. To describe that shield, he took us to a scientific image taken from his time.
Then he describes his spear which is one of the weapons used in war. He says that this spear is very long because he is a very huge creature. He compares the length of the spear to the tallest trees that were found at that time.
These trees were used for building ships and they took the tallest one of them to make it a mast. Of course at that time they didn't have ships moved by engines but they had masts and sails to be moved by the wind.
His spear is like the tall mast of an Admiral’s ship which is a very big ship. He's giving us extraordinary information which we call encyclopedic information we don't have much details and this is what we said that he is trying to compensate for the lack of invention.
We don't have suspense here because we know what is happening but we have fresh expressions about what was happening at Milton's time giving us information about certain inventions.
Line 300
His legions--Angel Forms, who lay entranced
Thick as autumnal leaves that strow the brooks
In Vallombrosa, where th' Etrurian shades
High over-arched embower; or scattered sedge
Afloat, when with fierce winds Orion armed
Hath vexed the Red-Sea coast, whose waves o'erthrew
Busiris and his Memphian chivalry,
While with perfidious hatred they pursued
The sojourners of Goshen, who beheld
From the safe shore their floating carcases
And broken chariot-wheels. So thick bestrown,
Abject and lost, lay these, covering the flood,
Under amazement of their hideous change.
He called so loud that all the hollow deep
Here comes Satan and found those fallen angels scattered around the lake like autumnal leaves, this is another simile. It's about the autumn of England. The leaves on the ground yellow, pale, weak and they have lost their greenness and strength. They are no more the spiritual angels of light. Now they have turned into defeated angels, so they have lost the freshness of their complexion. This information is taken from nature. In autumn the leaves fall in huge numbers. They are defeated and Satan wants to revive them. They are helpless defeated numerous yellow in color, weak.
Satan looks at them and addresses them line 315
Of Hell resounded:--"Princes, Potentates,
Warriors, the Flower of Heaven--once yours; now lost,
If such astonishment as this can seize
Eternal Spirits! Or have ye chosen this place
After the toil of battle to repose
Your wearied virtue, for the ease you find
To slumber here, as in the vales of Heaven?
Or in this abject posture have ye sworn
To adore the Conqueror, who now beholds
Cherub and Seraph rolling in the flood
With scattered arms and ensigns, till anon
His swift pursuers from Heaven-gates discern
Th' advantage, and, descending, tread us down
Thus drooping, or with linked thunderbolts
Transfix us to the bottom of this gulf?
Awake, arise, or be for ever fallen!"
He is addressing them as princes of heaven or flowers of heaven. He is trying to revive their spirits. You are strong warriors and you have to regain heaven again or you are going to stay helpless in this place forever instead of heaven. Aren't you going to try again and again to get heaven? Are you going to leave your conqueror who is now enjoying heaven referring to man who is going to heaven. Are you going to stay here forever if you don't rise now you're going to remain here forever?
He is giving them rhetorical questions to raise them. He's not really asking them but he is encouraging them raising them. He's trying to put some enthusiasm is them.
So here Milton makes us interested the story by giving this picture of Satan as a leader trying to arouse his fallen angels and we feel that he is a strong leader who knows what to do he's giving them orders to awaken and arise. His ordering them at the end.
This is how Milton is using his artistic skills. The poem is very musical. You will find internal music all the time the rhyme is very musical and this is one of the talents of Milton and this is how he is getting over the monotony and the boredom.
Next time will be the last time we will have the last poem and prepare any question.

هذي من النت

Andrew Marvell: Poem analysis » A Dialogue between Soul and Body
The dialogue form

The dialogue is a form of poetry which is not often used. However, Marvell did write several: A Dialogue between the Resolved Soul and Created Pleasure; Clorinda and Damon; A****************s and Thestylis are other examples, the first like this one, a moral debate; the other two, pastoral poems with some religious significance. It is best to see this dialogue as being like a first class cricket match. Both sides get two innings, alternately. At the end, we have to declare the match drawn. Marvell, though clearly favouring the Soul, does not give either side the match-winning argument.
Soul says

The soul opens the batting with a powerful complaint: it is not only being imprisoned in the body, but tortured by it. The image of the soul being imprisoned is typically Platonic. Its move is to escape through the death of the body. Marvell plays with several parts of this extended conceit: ‘blinded with an Eye’ makes a nice paradox. The organs of sense blind (and bind) the soul to heaven, keeping it bound to sense impressions. Blinding was a common form of torture, as was constant sound. The worst part is ‘a vain head’, meaning stuffed with idle, fruitless thoughts, and a ‘double Heart’, because divided.
Body replies

The body is not too well pleased with this onslaught, and accuses the soul of driving it around, when all it wants is a quiet life. It even has to get up and walk upright! (‘mine own Precipice I go’). The soul makes it restless with its own restlessness. It feels possessed by ‘this ill spirit’.
Soul’s response

The soul's response is to enlarge on the ‘double Heart’. It has its own grief through being trapped in the body and has to bear the body's grief as well. We might say in modern terms, the soul here is both the psychology and the spirituality of human existence: the psychology derives from the body; the spirituality, from its heavenly origins. Left to itself, it would escape the body by letting it die; but the body's concern is to keep itself alive, and the soul is forced to help it do that. Again, Marvell makes the most of this paradox in his imagery: ‘Shipwrackt into health again’; ‘whats worse, the cure’.
Body concludes

The body is allowed its second innings. It lists the psychological suffering the soul forces on it through hope, fear, love, hatred and so on. The list goes on through the whole stanza. It climaxes with the paradox:
What but a Soul could have the wit
To build me up for Sin so fit?
Only the soul has given it the consciousness of sin. Left to itself, it would live like the animals in instinctive, undifferentiated being. The final image is one that Marvell was to take up several times in his ‘Mower’ poems: the body is like an undifferentiated tree growing naturally; the soul like an architect (or topiary gardener, as we might say), which trims and prunes it into all kinds of outlandish and unnatural shapes.
