concernedLeavis’s views on university education.

He was accused of being both elitist and anti-democratic

Orrather, he did not overtly have one. Roland Barthes would have criticized himfor not declaring his ideology: his value system. Therefore, it is hard todetermine whether he had any consistency in his criticisms.

T.S Eliot demerits عيوبه ت س إليوت

1.glaring ones. Sometimes he is pontifical, assumes a hanging-judge attitude, and instead of sympathetic understanding, his pronouncements savour of a verdict. Often his criticism is marred by Personal and Religious prejudices, and dislike of the man comes in the way of an honest and impartial estimate. In this respect he does not live up to his own theory of the objectivity and impersonality of poetry. His condemnation of Milton, and that of Shelley, can hardly be called sound literary criticism
2.When he scoffs at Arnold for his being an over-worked inspector of schools, he drifts away from criticism proper and stoops to personal invective.
3.Moreover, he does not judge all by the same standards of criticism. For example, in his essay on Dante he remarks that knowledge of the ideas and beliefs of a poet is not essential for an appreciation of his poetry
But he condemns Shelley of his “repellant ideas.”
4.There is an element of didacticism in his later essays and with the passing of time his critical faculties were more and more exercised on social problems

ملخص من عند البنات عن ريتشارد

Critics veiw about Richarad I ماذا أخذ الكتاب من عند ريتشار وماهو الذي انتقدوه
Later critics who refined their formalist approach to New Criticism by actively rejecting his psychological emphasis included, besides Brooks and Tate, John Crowe Ransom, W.K. Wimsatt, R.P. Blackmur, and Murray Krieger. R.S. Crane of the Chicago school was also both indebted to Richards' theory and critical of its psychological assumptions. They all admitted the value of his seminal ideas but sought to salvage what they considered his most useful assumptions from the theoretical excesses they felt he brought to bear in his criticism. Like his student Empson, Richards proved a difficult model for the New Critics, but his model of close reading provided the basis for their interpretive methodology.
I wanted to put a document about
F. R. Leavis as a leader of’Cultural’ criticism but it does not work so I copy it here
F. R.Leavis is also studied as a leader of’Cultural’ criticism advocated and practised by such authentic and respectable critics as MatthewThe basic contention of the critics of this persuasion, according to Prof. Naresh Chandra, is that literature is the best medium for preserving and the best vehicle for thetransmission of culture from generation to generation, this forming an perpetuating a tradition in culture. The function of criticism, therefore, to so interpret literature that the cultural values embalmed in it may not only become evident, but also attractive to the mind of man. This function of criticism has become all the more important in our time when cultural values are in the danger of being denigrated by hostile forces like industrialism, political factionalism and fanaticism, political and capitalistic exploitation, scientific and technological materialism, threat of war, and general deterioration in human relations. Naresh Chandra, NewCriticism

. F. R. Leavis’s English Literature and the University puts forward a strong case for the place of English literature in University studies, mainly on the ground that no other subject presents cultural values in a more forceful, persuasive and beautiful manner
The major shortcomings of Cultural criticism are its breeziness; the concern of the critics of this school is much more with the culture as embedded in Anglo-Saxon tradition. The critic is committed to a certain concept of culture and has no values of his own, and thus this type of criticism reduces the universal to the condition of accidents. Poetry and literature are concerned with universal and abiding entities, but culture cannot claim any such attributes. It cannot be accepted as pure literary criticism as it has a tilt towards propaganda.

R. Leavis and the Valuation School of Criticism=correction of opinion=of the opinion that tHEe ‘science’ of literary criticism is ‘valuation by some standard, of the worth of literature’ (The Nature of Criticism). =Ernest Boyd’s book Literary Blasphemies, which aims at revisiting downward the traditional estimates of a number of authors from Shakespeare to Hardy. The major writer of evaluative criticism is Yvor Winters.
