he uses suspense through the plot by keeping secrets from us , by not telling us the whole truth, by using the setting- which is an important element in a well-made play, what we call the stage properties, he uses them in order to forward the action and also put us in a stage of suspense. For instance, the empty chairs in act I, who we are conscious to know who is coming to fill this empty chair. Then about the unconventional marriage he is going to marry, keeping the name of the wife, then telling us the name of the wife, then having unopened letters, postpone, delay of letters, hidden secrets that bring about changes in the action. Timing is the most important. Letters are there. They are left unopened, sometimes the opening of the letters is delayed, with the delay of the opening of the letter, there is change in the consequences that could have been the letter, had the letter been opened at a certain time.
There are two delays of opening letters in the play. In each one of them, we have a different outcome of the delay.
in act I we have the arrival of the letter of Ellean to tell her father that she was not going to remain in the convent because her mother came to her in her dream and asked her to take care of her father and that she has changed her mind because of the vision she had of her mother and because she feels compassion of her father when he went to the convent to convince her to come back.
The letter ahs arrived before Paula came to visit her husband to be in act I. but Aubrey was so busy with his friends that he did not open the letter. The servant came and put the letters in a place that Aubrey would notice them. He put them on the mantel piece to catch Aubrey’s attention. Audrey has not opened the letters until Paula’s comes in. the delay of opening the letter after the arrival of Paula is the most important.
