أهميتهـThe pirates scene is a very short scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet, but its significance could be realized through several points. This scene lends pace and movement to the action. The arrival of the sailors with the news that Hamlet has returned to Denmark indicates that the final climax of the action is not far removed. The Prince will be surprised to learn that much has occurred since his departure, including the return of Laertes to avenge his father and the insanity of his beloved Ophelia.It shows Shakespeare's skill in solving the situation and bringing the hero back to do a quick action.

التكنيكIn Hamlet, Shakespeare uses a very helpful technique to ensure the significance of the pirates scene which is known as the deus ex machina. The literally meaning of the deus ex machina is “god from the machine”. It is an improbable or unexpected plot device or character whereby a previously intractable problem is suddenly ,and abruptly solved with an often contrived introduction of a new character or object in a work of fiction or drama. The kidnapping of Hamlet, alone, by pirates in order to escape his orchestrated death in England is in large part an example of deus ex machina. Only by returning to the center of the conflict can Hamlet create the forces that drive the climax, denouement, and resolution.
الثيمThe short Act 4, scene 6 is primarily devoted to plot development and the story of the pirate attack has little to do with the main themes of the play, but it does provide an interesting variation on the idea of retributive justice, since instead of punishing someone for doing something wrong, Hamlet states his intention to reward the pirates for the right they have done in returning him to Denmark. He is finally prepared to revenge his father's murder; to act, even as he poignantly comprehends that action will very likely cause his end.
أثر السين على شخصيتهـAs act 4 begins with Hamlet fill in the detail of what happened to him since he left Denmark it's clear that his inner struggle has been manifested from the time of his first appearance in this play. Now it is to hear no more expression of self-approach or doubts that he will act positively against Claudius. He is able to formulate a plan and to execute it without delay. He has found man's wisdom, to have its limitation: fortune, accident, chance - call it that what it will and can determine the course of events, as his own experience aboard the ship proves.Shakespeare skillfully chooses a problem that seriously threatened Elizabethan/ Jacobean security: the prevalence of pirates which present him as great representative of his age.
