theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is order, disorder and order

The theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is order, disorder and order. There are disturbances in the normalcy and its restoration, or discord and accord contrast. The drama starts with order, and in the middle of the drama there comes disorder, and again we see the drama has been restored in order. This discord and accord (quite and harmony) is the theme of the drama. We see two worlds,
Ø Athens and the forest. In Athens we see order and in the forest we see disorder. In Athens we see day, and in the forest we see night. In Athens we see normality, and in the forest we see abnormality. When the drama shifts from Athens to the woods we find disorder in the woods. When Theseus gives orders to Hermia that she should follow her father’s orders or be ready for death or leading the life of a nun, Hermia and Lysander decide to elope. On the other hand, the Athenian workmen who have to rehearse their play-within-a play go to the woods to find none of them know about the other.
Ø Hermia elopes so that she can challenge the order of her father; she revolts against the order of Athens. In Athens we can see that the father, who is the head of the family, has the absolute right and he can choose his son in law. This basically suits the Elizabethan way of life.
In the drama we find that if the rule is not followed there is a conflict; Egeus reaches to the king and he passes his judgment. This shows that kings had power over people of their countries. But when Hermia and Lysander elope to the woods, this shows the revolt against the established order; this revolt and elopement symbolizes the disorder. Here we can see that Egeus tries to restore the accepted norms and he gets help from the king for justice. Again the discord is created by the following of Demetrius and Helena.
So, the disorder is found in the fairy world itself when Oberon uses the love juice on Titania’s eyes and she falls in love with Bottom the Athenian workman. We also find disorder in the love of Lysander to Helena. Again, we find disorder in the mechanical characters because Puck the fairy has the power to change the shape of other persons. The fairy king and queen also have the power to correct and bring the normal activities. Again, whatever the disorder in the drama, order has been restored by the intervention of the supernatural element; the confusion and the contradictions are all brought back into normal by the supernatural intervention
When the lovers wake up from their confusion and what they have experienced in the night, Titania recovers from her love with Bottom. All discords end in concord; order is again established and the lovers return to the city happily married
1)This elopement is what leads to disorder; revolting against her father’s orders and against the king is also disorder.2) The disorder also starts with the mechanical characters when Bottom has to play the role of Pyramus and he was transformed into a monster. The next 3)disorder is with Titania after Oberon pours the love juice into her eyes and she falls in love with Bottom. The second disorder we see with Hermia and Lysander is when Puck mistakes Lysander to be Demetrius and pours the love juice into his eyes. The three disorders we see are in the mechanical character Bottom who has to play the role of Pyramus but has been transformed into a monster by Puck and falls in love with Titania, the two pairs of lovers, and the fairy world.
