تقول لنا لو بالمختصر والعربي وش قصتها ..
لآن مو معقوله أجلس أقرأ 400 ورقه بيوم ..!

إلي عندها معلومه لو بسيطه عن هالروآيه بليز لآ تبخل ..
ومي توو ألحين بحآول أقرأ بالسمري والشخصيآت وبرجع أقول إلي فهمته ..

يوستيسيا فتاة بنت 18 سنه شايفه نفسها ، تمبى تتزوج وآحد غني الي يقدر يطلعها برا الهيث ..
توميسن و ولديف كان المفروض انهم يتزوجوا بس في يوم زوآجهم أكتشفوا ان الودينغ ليسنغ تبعهم انفالد .. فتنكسل الزوآج .. طبعاً ما أحد يعرف هل هالشي كان مُخطط له من ولديف أو انه كان عن طريق الخطأ..
- يوستيسيا فرحت بهالخبر لأنها تفكـر ان ولديف يحبها أكثر من أنه يحب توميسن ..
- عمة توميسن مع فين حآولوا انهم يرجعوا علاقة توميسن بـ ولديف ويخلوهم يتزوجوا من جديد حفاظاً عليها من كلام النـآس ..
- ولديف تقدم لـ يوستيسيا لكنها رفضت بحجة انها تفكر نفسها انها احسن من توميسن وكيف تتزوج من وآحد تقدم لـ توميسن وماتقدم لها قبل ! (:Looking_anim: سايكو هههه )
- بعدين يوستيسيا شافت ليها شوفة ثانيه :biggrin: الا هو كليم يوبرايت ولد مسس يوبرايت ويصير ولد عم يوستيسا وحبيبها السابق :10111: .. عجبها مرررآآ لأنه يدير شغل مرآ كويس في باريس وثاني شي انها وأخيراً بتقدر تطلع من الهيث .. علشان تضمن انه مايحب توميسن من جديد أنضمت مع مسس يوبراين وفين في انهم يخلوا توميسن تتزوج ولديف من جديد ونجحت في ذالك وتزوجوا الاثنين ..
- يوستيسيا و كلم حبوا بعض وتزوجوا رغم معارضه مسس يوبراين للزواج لانها تعتقد ان يوستيسيا بنيه موو زينه .. بعدهااا آمال يوستيسيا تحطمت لآن كلم قرر انه يضل في الهيث ويعمل كـ مدرس للأطفال الي مايقدروا يلتحقوا بالمدآارس الخاصه .. وبسبب انه كان يقرأ كثير في الليل بصره ضعف فبالتالي مابيقدر يعمل كمدرس فاشتغل ك فروز كتيغ ويوستيسا كانت مره متفشله من شغل زوجها ..
- يوستيسيا تهاوشت مع أم زوجها على سالفه فلوس :cheese: ( مافهمت السالفه بالضبط ).. العلاقه توترت بينهم وهالسالفه زآدت من رغبة يوستيسيا انها تنفصل عن زوجها ..
- في يوم من الايام قررت مسس يوبراين انها تزور أبنها ... رآاحت وطقت الباب ويوستيسيا مافتحت ليها الباب لان كان عندها ضيف والضيف هو ( ولديف) ..
-مسس يوبراين تعبت نفسيتها ومرضت ومن ثم ماتت :139: لما ماتت الام جلس كلم يعاتب نفسه :sm1: بعدين اكتشف من وآحد أن أمه ماتت بسبب انها رآحت تزورهم في الكوتج ويوستيسيا مافتحت لها الباب لان كان معها ولديف .. بعدها يوستيسيا طلبت الطلاق وتطلقت ورجعت بيت جدها وقعدت تخطط مع ولديف انه يهرب معاها :24_asmilies-com:
- توميسن كانت شاكه انه زوجها مقرر انه يهرب مع يوستيسا فرآحت لـ كلم تطلب منه يساعدها في منعهم من الهروب :10111: ورآح معاهم فين ..
- لما فين وتوميسن وكلم رآحوا وراهم ، اكتشفوا ان يوستيستا طاحت في السد .. كلم حاول يساعدها مع ولديف ولكن ولديف مع يوستيسيا غرقوا ووماتوااااااا ونجا كلم بس ..
- بعدها بسنه توميسن وفين تزوجوآ بينما كلم أصبح وحيداً وصار يعمل كـ وآعظ ديني ..،

Plot Summary
Book First: the Three Women
This novel opens with a sweeping view of the Egdon Heath countryside, providing descriptions of the landscape and some sense of its history. In the next chapter, an old man — later identified as Eustacia Vye's grandfather — meets a red dye salesman, known as a reddleman. They briefly discuss Thomasin's marriage, and the old man infers from the reddleman that the wedding has been postponed.
In town, Thomasin meets her aunt and explains that her wedding was called off because of a mix-up with the license. They go to the tavern and receive assurance from Damon Wildeve, her fiancé, that he will marry Thomasin in a day or two. When the locals show up to sing to the newlyweds, they are forced to pretend that the marriage occurred.
After everyone leaves that night, Wildeve sees a bonfire up on the hill nearby the Vye house. Eustacia Vye, the exotic beauty who lives there, has heard from her grandfather that the marriage did not take place. She lit the fire, which was not unusual because many people celebrated Guy Fawkes Day with bonfires. Yet this was the same way she had attracted Wildeve the previous year; he had come to her house and they had begun a passionate affair. Confused, he goes to Eustacia again. After his visit, Wildeve decides that he does not want to marry Thomasin after all.
Diggory Venn, the reddleman, has been in love with Thomasin since childhood. He finds out about Eustacia and tries to get her to leave town. Thomasin's aunt, Mrs. Yeobright, tells Wildeve her niece is thinking of marrying Venn. When she hears this news, Eustacia decides that Wildeve is not as attractive as she had thought; she begins to have doubts about her relationship with him. Meanwhile, news comes that Mrs. Yeobright's son, Clym, has returned from Paris.
Book Second: the Arrival
Clym's arrival is important news to the locals, who remember what a bright, promising boy he was. Bored with Wildeve, Eustacia becomes infatuated with Clym. On the night that the drama troupe is going to put on a Christmas play, Eustacia finally meets Clym, although she keeps her identity hidden. She is so preoccupied with Clym that she fails to show up to tell Wildeve whether she will run off with him or not. Diggory Venn pressures her to leave Wildeve alone, and so she writes Wildeve a letter saying that she will not be involved with him anymore.
As soon as Venn admits that he is not engaged to Thomasin, Wildeve rushes to her house and sets a wedding date. When Thomasin and Wildeve get married, the witness to their wedding is Eustacia Vye — she just happenes to be in the churchyard when a witness is needed.
Book Third: the Fascination
Clym's Christmas holiday at home turns into an extended stay. He considers his life in the diamond trade in Paris to be superficial, and formulates a plan to open a school in the heath where he can teach the poor children who otherwise would get no education. He finally meets Eustacia, and is impressed with her beauty and intelligence. He informs his mother that Eustacia could be a part of his heath school.
Yet in fact, his mother doubts that Clym is serious about being a teacher at all. She accuses him of being interested in the young woman romantically. Eustacia does not like his plan to open a local school either; she sees none of the charm of Egdon Heath, and instead wants to go to Paris with him. When Clym proposes, she accepts, thinking that she can change his mind after their marriage.
After a fight with his mother, Clym marries Eustacia. In protest, his mother does not even attend. Yet she decides to send a local boy to the wedding with a hundred guineas. On the way, Wildeve dupes the boy into gambling and takes all of the money, which he considers half his anyway; Diggory Venn, who has been following him, gambles with Wildeve and wins the money from him.
Book Fourth: the Closed Door
Not knowing that the money was meant for Thomasin and Clym, Venn gives it all to Thomasin. Mrs. Yeobright assumes that Wildeve gave the money to Eustacia, his old lover. Mrs. Yeobright and Eustacia have a bitter argument.
Studying late into the night to become a schoolmaster, Clym damages his eyes and is told to quit reading for a while. Rather than staying idle, he takes a job as a furze cutter. Being married to a furze cutter is exactly the fate that Eustacia thought she was avoiding by marrying a worldly diamond merchant from Paris. As a result, she is humiliated. Depressed about her life, she goes to a local dance and meets her old flame, Wildeve. He is now rich from an inheritance from a distant relative — just the kind of man she would have wanted to marry. Yet she refuses to get involved with him.
Wildeve cannot get Eustacia out of his mind. He goes to her house at night, but Diggory Venn plants traps along the path. To avoid Venn, Wildeve goes to the house one afternoon. That happens to be the afternoon that Mrs. Yeobright has decided to visit Clym and Eustacia's house for the first time.
With Clym exhausted and sleeping on the couch, Wildeve arrives and Eustacia invites him into the living room. Just as they decide that they will not have an affair together, Mrs. Yeobright knocks at the door. Eustacia ushers Wildeve to the back door. When she checks the front door, Eustacia finds that Mrs. Yeobright has left.
On the way back to her house, Mrs. Yeobright walks with a young boy from the area, Johnny, telling him that her son has broken her heart. He leaves her when she sits down at the side of the trail to rest. That night, after work, Clym decides to visit his mother and settle their differences. He finds her lying on the side of the road, unable to talk. Local people determine that she has been bitten by a snake. They try to cure the bite.
Meanwhile, Wildeve has returned to the house to say goodbye to Eustacia. She has him walk her to join Clym and Mrs. Yeobright. They come across the people trying to revive the sick women and Eustacia is afraid to let anyone know she is there. Mrs. Yeobright dies, and the boy she was walking with tells Clym that she said that afternoon that her son had broken her heart.
Book Fifth: the Discovery
In mourning, Clym is overcome with sorrow and grief until he finds out more about his mother's last day. It is then that he learns that there was another man in the house, and that Eustacia looked out the window at Mrs. Yeobright when she was knocking. He accuses her of having an affair, so she moves back into her grandfather's house. Wildeve comes to her and asks her to go away with him, but she refuses to be unfaithful to Clym. When he asks if there is anything he can do for her, she says he can arrange transportation to the port town of Budmouth, where she can catch a ship.
Thomasin convinces Clym to forgive Eustacia, but she has already left. That night, Wildeve tells Thomasin that he has to go away for a while; she sees him take a huge roll of bills, indicating that he is going for a long time. Thomasin tells Clym that she thinks Wildeve and Eustacia are running away together. After he goes to stop them, she goes out into the storm too. Lost, she comes across Diggory Venn's wagon and he helps her in the search. Just as Clym finds Wildeve's coach, they hear a body fall into the river near the dam. Both men jump in to save Eustacia. When Venn arrives he jumps in too, pulling out Clym and Wildeve. Wildeve and Eustacia are dead, but the doctor is able to revive Clym. He blames himself for her death in addition to the death of his mother.
Book Sixth: Aftercourses
One year later, Clym lives with Thomasin and her daughter in his mother's old house. Diggory Venn has made enough money selling reddle to buy a large dairy farm. Characters
Christian Cantle
Christian is a shy, ineffectual young man, nervous around women. Entrusted to go to Clym's house on his wedding day and deliver a gift — one hundred guineas that are to be divided between Clym and Thomasin — Christian loses the money to Wildeve in a game of dice.
Grandfer Cantle
Grandfer (a title that is local dialect for "Grandfather") represents the lively spirit of the simple country people. At almost seventy, he is eager to dance, sing, joke, and tell exaggerated stories.
Charley
Charley is a local man who cares for Eustacia. After Eustacia has argued with Clym and gone back to her grandfather's house, Charley takes care of her. He makes a fire for her and feeds her, and when he sees that she has looked too long and sorrowfully at the pistols, he sneaks through a window and takes them away to hide them.
Olly Dowden
A local woman, Olly is a besom maker. Wildeve takes a bottle of wine to her sick husband one night, using the visit as an excuse when he goes to see Eustacia.
Humphrey
Humphrey is a furze-cutter. When Clym decides to go into the business of cutting furze, he borrows Humphrey's old equipment.
Johnny Nunsuch
Johnny is a young boy who lives near Captain Vye's house. At the beginning of the novel, Eu-stacia pays him to tend the bonfire that she uses to signal Wildeve. He sees Wildeve talking to Eustacia and tells Venn about it. Johnny later walks with Mrs. Yeobright after she leaves Clym's cottage at Alderworth.
Susan Nunsuch
Susan is Johnny's mother. A superstitious woman, she believes that Eustacia is a witch and blames her for her children's illnesses.
Diggory Venn
Venn is a local man that has been in love with Thomasin since childhood. As such, he frequently works behind the scenes to protect her and assure her happiness. He is called the "reddleman" because he deals in reddle, a dye used by sheep farmers; as a result of handling it, his clothes, skin, and everything he owns are dyed red, giving him a devilish look. It is Venn who brings Thomasin back to town after her marriage to Wildeve is delayed. When he finds out that Wildeve has been seeing Eustacia, Venn pressures him to marry Thomasin; though it means he cannot have Thomasin for himself, it would be the best thing for her reputation. Moreover, he offers to arrange a job for Eustacia so that Wildeve will go back to Thomasin and make her happy.
After Wildeve wins the money that Christian was supposed to deliver to Clym and Thomasin, Venn wins it back and gives it to Thomasin. When Wildeve has run off with Eustacia, Venn helps Thomasin find them. It is Venn who saves Clym's life by pulling him out of the water. When he has saved up enough money, Diggory Venn quits the reddle business and buys a dairy farm. Eventually he proposes to Thomasin and they marry.
Captain Vye
Captain Vye is Eustacia's grandfather.
Eustacia Vye
Eustacia is local woman and one of the major characters of the novel. She is exotic, beautiful, ambitious, and eager to leave Egdon Heath. Much of the action in this story revolves around the fact that men find Eustacia so unnaturally attractive that there are even rumors of her being a witch. Born and raised in the seaside resort of Budmouth, Eustacia's father was a musician from the island of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea. Eustacia was educated and raised in a cosmopolitan environment, but after her parents died her grandfather brought her to Egdon Heath.
She is forced to find the excitement she craves in her relationships with men. She has an affair with Wildeve, but cuts it off after he breaks his engagement to Thomasin. She falls in love with Clym before meeting him, almost solely on the fact that he had a successful career in Paris. While courting, Clym is adamant about the fact that he plans to stay in the country and open a small school, but Eustacia believes she can change his mind later. When Clym takes a job cutting furze, Eustacia resents him.
Soon after Eustacia marries, Wildeve inherits a fortune. Eustacia feels she has married the wrong man. This feeling intensifies when Clym accuses her of causing his mother's death. Wildeve offers to take her away, but Eustacia insists on remaining faithful to her wedding vows. She does accept a ride to the port town. Tragically, she drowns in the reservoir, and there is a question whether her death might have been a suicide.
Damon Wildeve
Wildeve is a wild young man. Engaged to Thomasin, he has a long-standing affair with Eustacia. In fact, he decides to drop Thomasin for Eustacia; instead, Eustacia breaks off their affair and he marries Thomasin. Not surprisingly, he isn't a very good husband. Just as Eustacia is feeling that her marriage to Clym is boring and difficult, Wildeve inherits a fortune; they meet at a dance and find each other exciting all over again. When she separates from Clym, Wildeve offers Eustacia anything that his money can offer, but she declines. At the end of the novel, he drowns in the reservoir trying to save her.
Clemson Yeobright
The "native" of the novel's title, Clemson (also known as Clym) is a local boy who has returned to Egdon Heath after a successful career in Paris. He is sick of city life, and looks forward to starting a local school. Not long after he returns, he meets Eustacia and marries her. He thinks that Eustacia supports his plan to start a school, and is shocked when he realizes that she doesn't. While studying to be a teacher, Clym damages his eyes. Because he cannot read until they heal, he takes a job cutting furze, which is what most of the local men do for a living.
After his mother's death, he feels guilty and blames himself. When he finds out that Eustacia did not let his mother in the house because she was talking with Wildeve, he accuses his wife of having an affair and blames her for his mother's death. After Eustacia's death, he lives with Thomasin and considers marrying her. When he realizes that she will be happy married to Diggory Venn, Clym becomes an open-air preacher and becomes famous by talking to the field workers in language that they understand.
Mrs. Yeobright
Clym's mother, Mrs. Yeobright, represents conventional Victorian values in the novel. For example, when Wildeve postpones the marriage, she feels that Thomasin's honor is at stake; to save her niece's reputation, she pressures Wildeve to fulfill his commitment. Mrs. Yeobright also objects to her son Clym marrying Eustacia, considering the young woman a "bad girl." She does not attend their wedding, but gives him his inheritance as a present. When she receives no thanks for it, she reaches the conclusion that Wildeve gave the money to Eustacia. When Eustacia denies knowing anything about it, the two women have a fight.
To reconcile with her son, Mrs. Yeobright travels to Clym's house, but by mistake, no one lets her in. Mrs. Yeobright walks home feeling that she has been turned away, and on the way a snake bites her. Clym finds her on the path that night, dying.
Thomasin Yeobright
Thomasin is Clym Yeobright's cousin. She is in love with the charismatic Wildeve and is disappointed when he puts off their marriage. She considers marrying Diggory Venn, the reddleman who is in love with her. Yet she takes his devotion for granted and is still attracted to Wildeve. Eventually she does marry Wildeve, but their union is not a happy one. After her husband dies, she marries Diggory Venn, who has become a wealthy dairy farmer.
Media Adaptations
Return of the Native was adapted as a television presentation for the Hallmark Hall of Fame series in 1994, starring Clive Owen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Joan Plowright. The television movie was directed by Jack Gold and released as a video in 1999 by Hallmark Home Entertainment.
Audio Partners Publishing Company has an unabridged, 12 — tape edition of actor Alan Rick-man reading the novel which was produced in 1999.

Themes
Time
The role of time and the effect of its passage are major themes in the novel. As the story spans eighteen months, the landscape of the heath remains unchanged — that consistency is reflected in the people who live on the heath for generation after generation. They are creatures of tradition, following the same wedding rituals, the same harvest rituals, the same holiday traditions and the same folk remedies (such as the traditional cure for an adder's bite) that has been handed down to them. Sometimes traditional beliefs lead to hostility, like the fear of Eustacia Vye being a witch.
The characters who encounter difficulty are the ones who are not content to live in rhythm with country life. Most notably, Eustacia is impatient with life on the heath, wishing for the "bustle" of Paris. Wildeve is also bored with life on the heath. When he inherits a large sum of money, he plans to tour the world. Clym is the most divided character in the novel; Eustacia assumes that he is too worldly to settle down in the country, but he is able to appreciate the beauty of the land's timelessness.
[W]hen he looked from the heights on his way he could not help indulging in a barbarous satisfaction at observing that, in some of the attempts at reclamation from waste, tillage, after holding on for a year or two, had receded again in despair, the ferns and furze-tufts stubbornly reasserting themselves.
Nature
Hardy introduces his readers to the landscape of Egdon Heath before introducing any characters. This emphasizes the important role that the natural landscape will play in the story. His description of the natural setting can be taken as symbolic of the people who live there — "neither ghastly, hateful, nor ugly: neither commonplace, unmeaning nor tame; but, like man, slighted and enduring." It can also be taken as a simple acknowledgment that people come to resemble the place where they live.
For instance, the extreme heat of the August day when Mrs. Yeobright is turned away from Clym's cottage may be perceived as symbolic of her turmoil. Hardy addresses this issue directly when he has Eustacia wander out into a violent storm on the night of her greatest mental anguish: "Never was harmony more perfect than that between the chaos of her mind and the chaos of the world without." If the people of Egdon Heath seem carefree, it is because they are comfortable in their surroundings.
The character who appears to be most in tune with nature's mysteries is Diggory Venn. He does not look like a human because of the red dye that has seeped into his skin and hair, and he does not operate by the rules of human interaction, instead appearing and disappearing mysteriously at night. It is not surprising that in the end he becomes a dairy farmer — making his living with domesticated animals, in harmony with nature but not completely subject to its whims.
Conscience
The characters in The Return of the Native are motivated by their consciences more than any other driving force. Their attempts to avoid social confrontation are not guided by concern about what others will think, but by what harm they will do to others. This is evident in the opening chapters, with Thomasin's return after her aborted attempt to be married; although eloping is considered shameful, Thomasin and Wildeve are unconcerned about that social stigma, which is quickly forgotten anyway.
On the other hand, Wildeve is unwilling to go through with his wedding to Thomasin when he feels that he might end up regretting it and longing for Eustacia. When they do marry, it is not to satisfy the social requirement, but because of Wildeve's failed romantic life. Diggory Venn is driven to assure Thomasin's happiness, passing up opportunities that could benefit him in order to protect her. Telling her about Wildeve's involvement with Eustacia might make her forget Wildeve — thereby clearing the way for him — but Venn cannot hurt her. So he keeps silent.
Late in the novel, when Eustacia realizes that Wildeve has become the rich, worldly husband that she always wanted, she does not run away with him because she cannot hurt Clym. At her house, he says that he could not abandon his wife either, but later, when Eustacia is leaving town, he is willing to run away with her, still making sure that Thomasin will receive half of his inheritance.

Style
Point of View
This novel is told from the third-person point of view, which means that the narrator is a disembodied voice, referring to each character as "he" or "she." However, the narrative is not omniscient. This means that the narrator looks at the story unfolding from different points of view, but when it settles on any particular viewpoint it stays consistent, if only for a short amount of time. When new information is introduced into the story, that information is initially understood only in terms of the narrator's point of view at the time.
For instance, when Wildeve first appears, readers are not told who he is; his character is revealed by what he says. Clym is a mystery for Eustacia to fantasize about long before his thoughts are related. In fact, even when they do talk outside of the Christmas party, the narrative shifts from her perspective to his then back to hers. Giving readers access to just one person's experience at a time is called "limited omniscience."
By limiting the flow of information to the reader, Hardy is able to create a sense of mystery in the story. This is accomplished because the motivations and intentions of the characters are not always immediately clear. When Hardy wants to convey theories and opinions, he frequently presents a scene in which several of the local characters are gathered together and talking while doing something else. This occurs in the bonfire scene in the chapter called "The Custom of the Country" and in the later chapter where people gather and discuss the best way to deal with a snakebite. A contrast to this is the scene of hauling the bucket out of the well: general knowledge of the subject of bucket retrieval is conveyed directly from the narrator to the reader here, rather than through the conversation of the locals.
Structure
This book was written for magazine serialization, and this is reflected in its structure. Actions occur within specific episodes, and future developments in the story are foreshadowed. Chapters end with lines that are meant to raise curiosity, a technique that is effective to keep readers of novels turning the pages. Moreover, it was meant to inspire excitement so the reader would buy the next month's installment.
A good example of this technique is when Thomasin returns unmarried from Angelbury. The chapter ends with her aunt asking, "Now Thomasin what's the meaning of this disgraceful performance?" Readers know that the explanation will follow, but it does not follow right away. Viewers of television — where shows are regularly scheduled in weekly installments — are very familiar with this technique.
Critics have also contended that this book is structured like a Shakespearean drama. Most of Shakespeare's plays were organized in five acts, with a climactic conclusion in the last act. Although The Return of the Native is presented in six books, most critics agree that its artistic structure only requires five — the sixth was added to please general audiences that wanted to see everything turn out all right in the end. A clue to the book's debt to Shakespeare is the reference to King Lear, one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, in the introduction.

Themes
Time
The role of time and the effect of its passage are major themes in the novel. As the story spans eighteen months, the landscape of the heath remains unchanged — that consistency is reflected in the people who live on the heath for generation after generation. They are creatures of tradition, following the same wedding rituals, the same harvest rituals, the same holiday traditions and the same folk remedies (such as the traditional cure for an adder's bite) that has been handed down to them. Sometimes traditional beliefs lead to hostility, like the fear of Eustacia Vye being a witch.
The characters who encounter difficulty are the ones who are not content to live in rhythm with country life. Most notably, Eustacia is impatient with life on the heath, wishing for the "bustle" of Paris. Wildeve is also bored with life on the heath. When he inherits a large sum of money, he plans to tour the world. Clym is the most divided character in the novel; Eustacia assumes that he is too worldly to settle down in the country, but he is able to appreciate the beauty of the land's timelessness.
[W]hen he looked from the heights on his way he could not help indulging in a barbarous satisfaction at observing that, in some of the attempts at reclamation from waste, tillage, after holding on for a year or two, had receded again in despair, the ferns and furze-tufts stubbornly reasserting themselves.
Nature
Hardy introduces his readers to the landscape of Egdon Heath before introducing any characters. This emphasizes the important role that the natural landscape will play in the story. His description of the natural setting can be taken as symbolic of the people who live there — "neither ghastly, hateful, nor ugly: neither commonplace, unmeaning nor tame; but, like man, slighted and enduring." It can also be taken as a simple acknowledgment that people come to resemble the place where they live.
For instance, the extreme heat of the August day when Mrs. Yeobright is turned away from Clym's cottage may be perceived as symbolic of her turmoil. Hardy addresses this issue directly when he has Eustacia wander out into a violent storm on the night of her greatest mental anguish: "Never was harmony more perfect than that between the chaos of her mind and the chaos of the world without." If the people of Egdon Heath seem carefree, it is because they are comfortable in their surroundings.
The character who appears to be most in tune with nature's mysteries is Diggory Venn. He does not look like a human because of the red dye that has seeped into his skin and hair, and he does not operate by the rules of human interaction, instead appearing and disappearing mysteriously at night. It is not surprising that in the end he becomes a dairy farmer — making his living with domesticated animals, in harmony with nature but not completely subject to its whims.
Conscience
The characters in The Return of the Native are motivated by their consciences more than any other driving force. Their attempts to avoid social confrontation are not guided by concern about what others will think, but by what harm they will do to others. This is evident in the opening chapters, with Thomasin's return after her aborted attempt to be married; although eloping is considered shameful, Thomasin and Wildeve are unconcerned about that social stigma, which is quickly forgotten anyway.
On the other hand, Wildeve is unwilling to go through with his wedding to Thomasin when he feels that he might end up regretting it and longing for Eustacia. When they do marry, it is not to satisfy the social requirement, but because of Wildeve's failed romantic life. Diggory Venn is driven to assure Thomasin's happiness, passing up opportunities that could benefit him in order to protect her. Telling her about Wildeve's involvement with Eustacia might make her forget Wildeve — thereby clearing the way for him — but Venn cannot hurt her. So he keeps silent.
Late in the novel, when Eustacia realizes that Wildeve has become the rich, worldly husband that she always wanted, she does not run away with him because she cannot hurt Clym. At her house, he says that he could not abandon his wife either, but later, when Eustacia is leaving town, he is willing to run away with her, still making sure that Thomasin will receive half of his inheritance.

Defining characteristics
There are defining characteristics of literary naturalism. One of these is pessimism. Very often, one or more characters will continue to repeat one line or phrase that tends to have a pessimistic connotation, sometimes emphasizing the inevitability of death.

Another characteristic of literary naturalism is detachment from the story. The author often tries to maintain a tone that will be experienced as 'objective.' He argued that his innovation in fiction-writing was the creation of characters and plots based on the scientific method.

The Second Mrs. Tanqueray was first performed on May 27, 1893, at the St. James Theatre, London, with Mrs. Patrick Campbell as Paula. It was a success in its own time, and was recognised as Pinero's greatest work. It is an absolute must-read for all students of Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, as an alternative and contemporary example of a play about a fallen woman.
More developed than Victorian Melodrama, Pinero's best known play is a tragedy of a "a woman with a past". However, unlike Wilde, Pinero does not treat at the issue of adultery as a social discussion, but as a crime that must be punished. His female protagonist, Paula, cannot be forgiven, nor understood, until she takes her own life. It is only with this death that the other characters understand their own fallability.
Aubrey Tanqueray, on the eve of his second marriage, entertains his three closest male friends at dinner. The dinner is designed as a farewell, as he believes that married friends' wives often do not get on. However, this is a masque for the real problem: his wife has "a past".
His bachelor friend, Cayley Drummle, remains after the others leave and to him Aubrey confesses the truth about "Mrs." Jarman, his future wife. Shortly after Drummle, too, has gone, Paula Jarman arrives bringing Aubrey a letter confessing certain details of her past, a letter which he chivalrously burns unopened.
We see the marriage a few months later, as Aubrey and Paula are struggling for happiness in his country house, "willowmere", in the company of Ellean, Aubrey's convent-reared daughter. She has returned to live with him, having faltered as she was about to take her vows. It becomes clear that the second Mrs Tanqueray has complex feelings for this step-daughter, and that Ellean cannot love her new step-mother. Paula is jealous of Aubrey's and Ellean's love for one another, and is anxious to win her confidence. However, this repels Ellean, who remains aloof.
To add to Paula's unhappiness, the neighbours, although old friends of Aubrey's, have conspicuously refrained from calling.
Finally Paula insists that if the neighbours will not visit, then she is going to invite Lord George Orreyed and his wife, also a notorious woman and a chorus girl, to be their guests. Horrified, Aubrey insists that she should not deliver the invitation.
To compound Paula's sense of being snubbed, their nearest neighbour finally calls, but to gain permission to take Ellean to Paris and London for the season. This inflames Paula's jealousy and sense of their precarious position in society's eyes. When Aubrey gives his permission, admitting that they themselves cannot give Ellean the social background to which she is entitled, Paula defiantly delivers her letter to the Orreyeds.
Paula finds herself utterly bored with her guests, but refuses to make up with her husband. Into this atmosphere, Ellean returns to ask her father's permission for her marriage to a Captain Ardale. Paula feels impelled to confess to Aubrey that the man who now wants to marry his daughter has been her lover and former "husband".
Ellean comprehends the situation and taunts Paula with the sort of "past" that she has already condoned in Ardale. In a final realisation that for a woman with a "past" there can be no future, Paula kills herself. As the cutain falls, Ellean understands that her own lack of friendship contributed to the tragedy, and wails "But I know--I helped kill her. If I'd only been merciful!"

The pre-Raphaelite brotherhood : an introduction
In art it refers to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of painters
(associated with the art critic John Ruskin)

In literature it describes the poets who had some connections with these artists and whose work shares some of the characteristics of Pre-Raphaelite art. a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848 by John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and William Holman Hunt.
• To reform art by rejecting the mechanistic approach adopted by the artists who succeeded Raphael and Michelangelo

Where does the name come from?
The Pre-Raphaelites thought Raphael had produced technically perfect religious pictures, but with little spiritual feeling.
On the contrary, they admired the art and painters before Raphael.
Pre-Raphaelite painters’ features:
• Beauty and comparative semplicity of the Medioeval world
• Fidelity to nature: first-hand ditailed representation of humble objects and natural elements in natural light
• Preference of bright, jewel-like colours that where often used in a symbolic way
• Also, many of the most notable Pre-Raphaelite paintings were inspired by the works of Dante, Shakespeare, Keats and Tennyson.
• Emphasis on beautiful, sensuous details
• Symbolic meaning associated with common objects or situations
• Feelings of nostalgia for a dream-like Medioeval world
• Use of melodious language
The Pre-Raphaelite movement, which was initiated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the mid-nineteenth century, was originally not a literary but an artistic movement. Rossetti, himself a painter (and a poet as well), felt that contemporary paintings had become too formal, academic, and unrealistic.
Salient Features:
Let us now consider the salient features of Pre-Raphaelite poetry.
(1) Break with Tradition:
Pre-Raphaelite poetry broke with the set tradition of poets like Tennyson. The Pre-Raphaelites revolted against the over-concern of poets like Tennyson with contemporary socio-political problems. Consequently, none of the Pre-Raphaelites concerns himself with sordid realism and the mundane issues of his day, but excapes to a dreamworld of his own making.
(2) Medievalism:
This dream-world is often provided by the Middle Ages which had, even before the Pre-Raphaelites, exercised a strong hold on the minds of some Romantics like Coleridge, Keats, and Scott. Medieval Italy, being the land of artists before Raphael, held for them a very special attraction. The medievalism of the Pre-Raphaelites had “a subtle something” which differentiates it from that of the Romantics before them. Saintsbury observes in this context: “The return of this school was to a medievalism different from the tentative and scrappy medievalism of Percy, from the genial but slightly superficial medievalism of Scott, and even from the more exact but narrow and distinctly conventional medievalism of Tennyson.” Some Pre-Raphaelites, such as Hunt and Millais the painter, were somewhat sceptical of medievalism but Rossetti and Morris, in particular, felt a compulsive fascination for the romance, chivalry, gorgeousness, mystery and supematuralism of the Middle Ages. Many of Rossetti’s poems (like The Blessed Damozel and Sister Helen) are redolent of the spirit of the Middle Ages. “As a medievalist,” says Compton-Rickett in A History of English Literature : “Rossetti is obviously in congenial surroundings for the mingled warp of sensuousness and supersensuousness, so characteristic of the Middle Ages, suited to a nicety his peculiar genius.” However, it was Rossetti alone who, among the members of the original Brotherhood, exalted medievalism to a cult. Later, Morris also came under the medieval spell. Morris was particularly interested in Chaucer, the fourteenth-century English poet. Though there is no resemblance worth the name between Morris and Chaucer, yet Morris’ interest in the Middle Ages (to which Chaucer belonged) is noteworthy. Like Rossetti he found asylum from the sordidness of contemporary life in the splendour of the Middle Ages. Most of Morris’ works (such as Guinever and Other Poems, The Haystack in the Flood, and some poems in the collection Earthly Paradise) are steeped in the medieval spirit. Explaining Morns’ return to the Middle Ages, Alfred Noyes observes in William Morris (English Men of Letters): “Morris turned to the Middle Ages not as a mere aesthete seeking an anodyne, not as an aesthetic scholar composing skilful exercises, but as a child turns to the fairy land.”
(3) Devotion to Detail:
The Pre-Raphaelites, as a rule, bothered more about the particular than about the general. Both in their painting and their poetry we come across a persistent tendency to dwell scrupulously on each and every detail, however minor or even insignificant by itself. They do not wield a broad and hurried brush, but love to linger on details for their own sake. They tried to paint the thing itself-not a traditional copy of it. For a perfect faithfulness of description the fidelity to details was, therefore, necessary. Sometimes this concern for details degenerates into a mannerised trick, but very often it strikes the reader with a forceful, concrete effect, making for freshness of perception. It may be pointed out that even before the Pre-Raphaelites, in some poems such as Tennyson’s Mariana, Coleridge’s Christabel, and Keats’s The Eve of St. Mark) this tendency to linger on simple details is discernible. Indeed, Christabel has rightly been called “the first Pre-Raphaelite poem.”
The details we have been talking about are purely visual in painting, but in poetry they may be auditory as well as visual. Pre-Raphaelite poets love both visual and auditory details. Now to take some examples. See the closing lines of Rossetti’ A Lost Confession:
She had a mouth
Made to bring death oflife-the underlip
Sucked in, as if it strove to kiss itself;
Her face was pearly pale.
Again, note the details in the very first stanza of The Blessed Damozel:
The blessed Damozel leaned out
From the gold bar of heaven;
Her eyes were deeper than the depth
Of waters stilled at even;
She had three lillies in her hand,
And the stars in her hair were seven.
The third and fourth lines are suggestive as well as concrete, but the last two lines could have been written by Defoe himself. Consider, again, the following passage from Morris’ Golden Wings:
There were five swans that never did eat
The water-weeds, for ladies came
Each day, and young knights did the same
And gave them cakes and bread for meat.
As an illustration of the abundance of auditory details, see the following passage from Rossetti’s My Sister’s Sleep:
Twelve struck. The sound, by dwindling years
Heard in each hour crept off, and then
The ruffled silence spread again
Like water that a pebble stirs.
Our mother rose from where she sat:
Her needles, as she laid them down,
Met lightly, and her silken gown
Settled; no other noise than that.
(4)Sensuousness:
Like Rossetti most Pre-Raphaelites were painters as well as poets. That explains much of the sensuousness of their poetry as well as their loving concern for details. Much of their poetry is as concrete as painting. Referring to Rossetti, Compton-Rickett observes: “That the pictorial element is more insistent in Rossetti than in Keats is obviously due to the fact that Rossetti’s outlook on the world is essentially that of the painter. He thinks and feels in pigments.” But this thinking and feeling “in pigments” sometimes leads the Pre- Raphaelites to excess, giving rise to two defects:
(i) Too much concern for detail without thematic relevance or any other functional significance. For instance, see the following lines from Rossetti’s My Sister’s Sleep:
Without, there was a cold moon up,
Of winter radiance sheer and thin;
The hollow halo it was in
Was like an icy crystal cup.
(ii) Excessive recourse to colourful decoration which within limits is pleasing enough, but becomes a cloying confection if carried beyond. As atypical instance of the Pre-Raphaelite taste for decoration consider the following lines from Christina Rossetti’s ^ Birthday:
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes!
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes :
Work it in gold and silver grapes
In leaves and silver fleur-de-lys.
A quaint feature of Rossetti is his interchange of sensory functions: he appears to be capable, for instance, of hearing with his eyes and seeing with his ears. Thus in Silent Noon we have the phrase “visible silence”, and last four (parenthetical) words in The Blessed Damozel are “I heard her tears.”
(5) Fleshly School of Poetry:
The sensuousness of the Pre-Raphaelites was considered culpable by the prudish Victorians when it came to the beauties of the human body. The Pre-Raphaelites made no bones about the exhibition of their voluptuous tendencies. But it is difficult to charge them with grossness or immorality. Swinburne and others strongly reacted to the charge of Buchanan that the poetry of their school was “fleshly.” Such poem? as Rossetti’s Troy Town and The House of Life are somewhat “fleshly,” but Rossetti is not an indecent sensualist as he deals with the physical body as something interfused with the inner character and even the spirit itself. Swinburne, however, was much too daring. Grierson and Smith observe: “Never since Venus and Adonis, Hero andLeander and the Songs and Sonnets of Donne had the passion of the senses been presented with such daring frankness.” Swinburne struck the readers with as intense a feeling of shock mixed with amazement as Byron had done before him. Indeed, it is to be admitted that the Pre-Raphaelites had an emotional overplus which led them to excessive sensuousness not entirely free from the immoral taint. Swinburne by his “protracted adolescence rather than by adult passion”, paints, as A. C. Ward puts it, “the bitter blossoms of fierce kisses, the lips intertwined and bitten, the bruised throats and bosoms, the heaving limbs, the dead desires and barren lusts.” All this is “fleshly” enough.
(6) Metre and Music:
Pre-Raphaelite poetry is rich not only in pictorial quality but also in music. The trouble is that the Pre-Raphaelites go to excess in both. Swinburne exhibits both the merits and demerits of being over-musical. The excessive use of alliteration and onomatopoeic effects makes often for a cloying sweetness. Legouis observes: “Vowels call to vowels and consonants to consonants, and these links often seem stronger than the links of thought or imagery.” According to Compton-Rickett, Swinburne’s effects are harmonic rather than melodic. As an instance, see the following lines from his Tristram of Lyonesse (1882):
Nor shall they feel or fear, whose date is done,
Aught that made once more dark the living sun
And bitterer in their breathing lips the breath
Than the dark dawn and bitter dust of death.
Alliteration is good if it does not become a persistent mannerism, and if it does not “out-sound” the sense.

Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote a variety of romantic, devotional, and children's poems. She is perhaps best known for her long poem Goblin Market, her love poem Remember, and for the words of the Christmas carol In the Bleak Midwinter.
Christina Rossetti, in full Christina Georgina Rossetti, pseudonym Ellen Alleyne (born Dec. 5, 1830, London, Eng.—died Dec. 29, 1894, London), one of the most important of English women poets both in range and quality. She excelled in works of fantasy, in poems for children, and in religious poetry.
Christina was the youngest child of Gabriele Rossetti and was the sister of the painter-poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In 1847 her grandfather, Gaetano Polidori, printed on his private press a volume of her Verses, in which signs of poetic talent are already visible. In 1850, under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyne, she contributed seven poems to the Pre-Raphaelite journal The Germ. In 1853, when the Rossetti family was in financial difficulties, Christina helped her mother keep a school at Frome, Somerset, but it was not a success, and in 1854 the pair returned to London, where Christina’s father died. In straitened circumstances, Christina entered on her life work of companionship to her mother, devotion to her religion, and the writing of her poetry. She was a firm High Church Anglican, and in 1850 she broke her engagement to the artist James Collinson, an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, because he had become a Roman Catholic. For similar reasons she rejected Charles Bagot Cayley in 1864, though a warm friendship remained between them.
In 1862 Christina published Goblin Market and Other Poems and in 1866 The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems, both with frontispiece and decorations by her brother Dante Gabriel. These two collections, which contain most of her finest work, established her among the poets of her day. The stories in her first prose work, Commonplace and Other Short Stories (1870), are of no great merit, but Sing-Song: a Nursery Rhyme Book (1872; enlarged 1893), with illustrations by Arthur Hughes, takes a high place among children’s books of the 19th century.
In 1871 Christina was stricken by Graves’ disease, a thyroid disorder that marred her appearance and left her life in danger. She accepted her affliction with courage and resignation, sustained by religious faith, and she continued to publish, issuing one collection of poems in 1875 and A Pageant and Other Poems in 1881. But after the onset of her illness she mostly concentrated on devotional prose writings. Time Flies (1885), a reading diary of mixed verse and prose, is the most personal of these works. Christina was considered a possible successor to Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as poet laureate, but she developed a fatal cancer in 1891. New Poems (1896), published by her brother, contained unprinted and previously uncollected poems.
Though she was haunted by an ideal of spiritual purity that demanded self-denial, Christina resembled her brother Dante Gabriel in certain ways, for beneath her humility, her devotion, and her quiet, saintlike life lay a passionate and sensuous temperament, a keen critical perception, and a lively sense of humour. Part of her success as a poet arises from the fact that, while never straining the limits of her sympathy and experience, she succeeded in uniting these two seemingly contradictory sides of her nature. There is a vein of the sentimental and didactic in her weaker verse, but at its best her poetry is strong, personal, and unforced, with a metrical cadence that is unmistakably her own. The transience of material things is a theme that recurs throughout her poetry, and the resigned but passionate sadness of unhappy love is often a dominant note
The meaning

In this poem, Christina describes life and death in a symbolically way through asking and answering. There are two speakers in the poem, one asking about the way uphill-the apprehensive traveler, and the other answering whom I prefer to regard as one who has experience death. So, the title uphill here indicates approaching Heaven.
The first stanza says that the road uphill is to wind all the way to the very end. Here, the road is like a life’s journey, if you want to seek Heaven, you shall encounter some obstacles or troubles on the way. And in the “end”, which means death, you will find it. Morn symbolic the sun and life while night implies dark and death, you shall pursue for Heaven from born till you die. I think the poets is also telling us that, our life time is just like a day’s journey, it is so short that we should cherish it and make good use of it.
In the second stanza, a “resting-place” for the night indicates death also, because when one is dead, he is usually said as in deep sleep. And heaven here is described as an inn, where one can spend his slow hark hours.
In the third stanza, there are also other travelers on the way which implies that on the way to Eternity, you are not alone and you find company all the way. And the door of heaven is always open to whom has experienced so much on the way there, so you don’t have to stand outside and wait.
In the fourth stanza, after one finishes his service and behave well, he will have a comfortable place to rest, that is, death. “Beds for all who come” ,Beds stand for death or can be interpreted as Heaven.
At the beginning of the poem, Rossetti says "Does the road wind up-hill all the way?/ Yes, to the very end" (1-2). I believe that in these two lines, Rossetti expresses the distress she is feeling with life in general and how she cannot believe it just keeps going on and on. She uses the road as a symbol for the journey of life and she cannot believe it is windy, or difficult the whole way up the hill, or through the path of life.
She goes on to say "Will the day's journey take the whole long day?/ From morn to night my friend" (3-4). In these lines, she is in this dialect with someone and is complaining that the journey of life takes the "whole long day," or in other words, she is in awe that it will take her entire life. In saying this, she is expressing how stressful and difficult she thinks of the journey of life and cannot believe she will have to go through the entire process to get to a peaceful place. I believe the person means from birth to death by their response. I think of the person talking to her as some short little elf-eared man for some reason. I picture him nicer than the men from "Goblin Market," but I think I still picture him as a goblin man because he the one that is giving her these answers that are difficult to hear, but is also telling her how to get to a better place.
The next four lines read:
"But is there for the night a resting place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss them" 5-8
In these lines, Rossetti is asking where the resting place is at the end of the road and my goblin man answers by saying there is a place in the darkness, in the unknown place. Rossetti is searching for this place of what is probably heaven, to get her out of the darkness, seeking shelter as a refuge. Then she asks how she will ever find it, if it is in this dark, unknown place. I think in this part, she is asking how she will know when it is her time to leave this earth. The face that she is asking all these questions about death contributes to the idea that she is looking for peace at the end of life. The man answers by telling her it will be impossible not to see the place once she gets there, like she will know when her time is up, even though it's an unknown area.
Rossetti speaks to this man again:
"Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I know, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at the door" (9-12).
She wants to know if she will be around other who are headed in the same direction towards deaths as she is when she gets to that point. When the man says, "Those who have gone before," I think he is telling her that she will run into those who have already passed on. At first I thought she was asking if she would have to call for death, but after reading it again, I think she is asking if she will have to call on heaven to open the door for her. The man responds by telling her in what seems like a friendly way that no, they will not keep her waiting.
Rossetti goes on to ask this man a couple more questions:
"Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labour you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come" 13-16She now wants to know if after the long journey of life, if she will find comfort at the end of the journey, if she will find peace in death. This contributes more to the idea that she is looking forward to some comfort and that she is looking for her peaces at the end of life (or heaven). She is continuing her journey of life by having the idea in her head that it will all be worth it in the end. The man tells her that she will get out of death what she put into life. Rossetti then asks if there will be a place for her after she dies and the man tells her there will be a place "for all who come," which is what I believe to mean, for all who come to heaven.
In every line of this poem, Rossetti is expressing how difficult her life is and how much she wishes for peace. She only seeks peace through the idea that she will one day reach heaven and is asking all these questions in hopes that she will find that peace by making it there one day. She answers her own questions by saying that you only get out of the after-life what you have actually put into life. This could have been a turning point for her in her life to maybe be a better person or just to be more religious in general so that she could get the escape of heaven when she dies. One thing is definitely true throughout this poem though, and that is the fact that she is writing about how difficult her life is and she is seeking some sort of release from it one day, that release being heaven.
The theme of this poem is that death is a way to leave for another world where we can find peace and comfort, so it is not terrible. The structure of this poem is arranged as a dialogue between a anxious traveler and a calm responder, so we readers may have a feeling that one is quite near to death and he is frightened while the other appears composed because he has experienced death, and he is trying to ease the seeker’s anxiety.
Every stanza begins with a question and ends with its answer, it seems that every question about death has an answer, so one doesn’t have to worry about that. And there many phrases indicating that death is not terrible at all. For examples, “of labor you shall find the sum” and “beds for all who come” tell us that if one finish his labor and do good things when he is alive, he can have a good ending of his life. And all men are equal in the sight of God, so none of them will be ignored.
Imagery and symbolism
The road - In Up-hill, the road symbolises the journey the speaker takes. Instead of being straight, the fact that it is ‘winding’ and ‘up-hill’ suggests that the path is long and difficult. However, that there is actually a road leading up the hill indicates that plenty of others have already taken the route that is being contemplated. The speaker will not have to carve or find her own path since it has already been revealed to her.
The road can be interpreted
• Literally, as a long walk to an unseen destination
• Metaphorically, as representing the path that life takes
• Symbolically, as the way to live spoken of in the Bible. See Aspects of Literature > Big ideas from the Bible > Path, way and Journey of faith, Exodus, pilgrims and sojourners.
The inn - The traveller is told that she ‘cannot miss that inn’ (line 8) that stands at the top of the hill and offers rest for those who have spent the entire day climbing. Literally, the fact that it stands out in the darkness of the night indicates that the light that it sheds is powerful and will not be overpowered. Metaphorically the ‘inn’ represents security. Against the context of the Bible, the idea of a place of welcome and rest echoes two allusions:
1. The description of the ‘rooms’ in heaven prepared for believers (as referred to in A Convent Threshold), taken from John’s Gospel. Jesus comforts his disciples with the promise:
My Father's house has plenty of room; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:2-3 TNIV
2. The inn which Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary sought for rest and a chance to give birth to Jesus. Although there was ‘no room for them in the inn’ (Luke 2:7) the poem gives assurance that there will be space for the speaker.
The door - The traveller asks whether s/he will have to ‘knock’ the door of the inn when s/he reaches it or whether s/he will be kept waiting for admittance. S/he is reassured that the door will be opened upon arrival and that ‘those who have gone before’ will be ready to greet him/her (lines 10-12).
If the poem is to be understood in a Christian context, Rossetti can be seen to take the image of the door from two references in the New Testament:
1. In Luke 11:9-10 Jesus encourages people to turn to God with their concerns:
So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; those who seek find; and to those who knock, the door will be opened. TNIV
2. In the last book of the New Testament, Revelation Jesus is depicted as a friend ready to share with those who ask for him:
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them and they with me. Revelation 3:20 TNIV
In this passage, the door spoken of refers to the acceptance of Jesus in the human heart. In Up-hill, the one knocking at the door is not Jesus but the traveller. However, the responsibility for creating an environment in which the door is ready to be opened lies with the individual - it is the speaker’s choice whether or not to persevere on the journey in time to reach the inn.

وبعدين يتكلم عن البطله الرئيسيه Eustacia اللي حبت Clym لآنه كان رآجع من بآريس وحركات وكذآ خخ وفي أمل انه يطلعها من هالمكان اللي هم فيه Heath ..

أول شي أستحملوني أذا عدت معلومه كذا مره بس لآني أبي أرتبها بمخي ومخكم :cheese: ..
- يتكون من شخصيه مهمه جدآ وتم وصفها بالروآيه كثير مع انها مو شخص Heath واللي درآت فيه كل الروآيه ..
- الشخصيه البطله وهي Eustacia Vye واللي كان لقبها Queen of the Night حبت لها واحد بالبدآيه أسمه Damon Wildeve وهو كذلك حبهآ ..
- بعدهآ الرجـآل سحب عليها لأنه وقع في حب Thomasin Yeobright وقرر أنها يتزوجهـآ .. وفي يوم زواجهم مدري وش صـآر بس الزواج تفركش بس السبب هو Wildeve .
- طبعـآ Eustacia لمآ درت عن هالقصه صددقت نفسسهآ وانه هالزواج انلغى لأن ولديف بعده يحبهآ ! أكثر من اللي كان ناوي يتزوجهآ ..
- جات عمة Yeobright تحاول تقنع ولديف يتزوج Yeobright عشآن سمعة البنت . حتى ولو كانت متأكده ان ولديف مايستحق بنت اخوها .. بس لآنهم فكتورين زي ماتدرون ..
- نجي لشخصية ثآنيه بالروآيه وهي : Diggory Venn رجآل وسيم يحب Yeobright وحبها لسنتين ومستعد يسوي أي شي يسعدهآ .. حتى لو كانت سعادتها متعلقه بزواجها من ولديف . وشخص مايهتم للمجتمع ويحب الطبيعه . وهالشخصيه أيضآ حاولت تجمع مابين ولديف و يوبرآيت وتخليهم يتزوجون ( بحكم انه يحبها ويبي سعادتها ) ورآح بالسر لعمتها وصارحها انه يبي يتزوج يوبرايت .
- يوبرآيت رفضت عرض الزواج اللي جاها من Venn من قبل سنتين < عشان كذآ هو راح لعمتها بالسر < مسكين طآح وجهه مره بعد لآزم الحين يدور سعآدة البنت اللي تبي زوج تحبه ..
- Wildeve قالت عنه الدكتوره بالسمبوليزم انه شخصيه تحب النسآء .. ومن صج هالرجال ما أستحى على وجهه ورجع لـ Eustacia يطلب زواجها .. بس البنت عاقله حسته انه مو كفو ورفضته .. لآن كبريئها ما يسمح لها تقبل الزواج بالرجال اللي طلب من قبل يوبرآيت واللي يوبرآيت تبيه ومن هالخرآبيط ..
- Eustacia .. الحين هالبنت المآديه حطت عينها على Clym ..
من هذآ ؟
- كلم شخصيه متعلمه .. وهو اللي مقصود بالروآيه بالنيتف اللي رجع .. رجع من بآريس و Eustacia حطت عينها عليه بما انه كان هناك واحتمال يطلعها من المكان السيئ ( بنظرهآ ) اللي هي عايشه فيه .. وهو ولد Mrs. Yoebright يعني يصير ولد عمت Yoebright .
- طبعآ تزوجت Eustacia الرجال اللي ظنت انه بيطلعها من Heath وبعد معارضة امه .. وحبها بسبب جمالها وطبيعتها < بما انها كانت بالـ 19 وشخصيه متهوره وزي كذآ ..
- الحين Eustacia ماتبي من Clym انها يحتك بـ Yoebright فصآرت هي الأخرى تحـآول انها توفق الزواج بين Wildeve & Yoebright .
- تزوجوآ وليدف و يوبرآيت .. وطبعآ ولديف حاط ببآله انه انتقم من 2 : Eustacia لآنها رفضته و العمه لآنها تظن انه مايستحق يوبرآيت .
- Eustacia رآضيه تماما باللي صـآر وانه يوبرآيت ولديف تزوجوآ .. لآن يوبرآيت ما بتأثر بـ كلم خلآص .. ( Mrs.Yoebright ) ( أم Clym ) كانت معارضه بقوه لهالزواج بحكم انها تعرف طبيعة Eustacia الأنانيه .. وانها ماتستحق ولدها وان القريه كلها تفكر فيها تفكير سيئ ..

- Clym وبعد ماتزوج Eustacia سحب عليهآ سحبه عنيفه ( الرجآل لآ بيرجع لبآريس ولآ بطيخ ) الرجال حب Heath وقرر يقعد فيها وشآف له مدرسة يدرس فيهآ ..
- وصآر مآسك له هالكتب .. يقرأ ويدرسّ .. لين مآبدى يخسر النظر اللي حقه .. وأشتغل بشغله أنسآنيه فالقريه واللي أحرجت زوجته وصدمت أمه ..
- صـآر يشتغل Furze -cutter < مدري وش تطلع هالشغله ! لآنه مفيده ومريحه ..
- نرجع لـ Diggory Venn الشخصيه الي تحب Yoebright قدر يحبط ولديف بسآلفة انتقآمه ..
- مدري وش سآلفة الفلوس بهالروآيه .. < اللي فاهمها لآ يقصر !
- اللي فهمته انه العمه رآسسله لـ Yoebright & Clym فلوس .,
- المال صآر بالبدايه بيد ولديف بعدين Venn بعدين THomasin Yoebright . ولكن نص من هالمال كان لـ Clym ومحد درى ..
- العمه فكرت انه ولديف خذ من هالفلوس وعطاهم لـ Eustacia .
- وان Eustacia جالسه تنكر قصة هالفلوس وان ماعندها لزوجها اي شي .< مسكينه ظلموهآ ..
- بعد ماتوضحت الأمور .. انكسر قلب Eustacia وماعادت علاقتها مع ام زوجها زينه وصارت مشآكل خلتها تتفارق مع Clym .
- العمه حست بتأنيب الضمير وصآرت تحـآول أصلآح الأمور بين ولدها وزوجته ورآحت لهم البيت ب محد فتح لها البآب مع انها كانت تدرري أن Clym وزوجته ورجال ثآني بالبيت < طبعا كلم مايدري عن امه كان نايم يمكن أو شي زي كذآ
- أنصدمت العمه وانهارت وبعد فتره من المشي بـ Heath ماتت بحضور ولدها .. < فكه منها خخ ..
- ثلآث أسآبيع من الحزن عليها .. و Clym يعاني يبي يعرف ليش امه انصدمت منه وليش مادخلت البيت لما جات .. لين آخر شي درى من الجيرآن ان زوجته مادخلتها لان كان عندها ( ضيف ) راح يسألها بس ماعطته جواب .. وصآرحته انه تكره Heath وانها تبي تطلع من هالمكان > بالعربي تبي فرقآه ..
- خلته فعلآ ورآحت تعيش مع جدهآ ..
- ألتقت بـ ولديف .. واللي وافق انها يساعدها انها تهرب من Heath . ويوصلها لمنطقه أسمها Budmouth ومن هناك تلقى طريقها لبآريس .. بس هو حاط ببآله انه يهرب معها < يعني هو الثاني يسسحب على Thomasin Yoebright . وانه ورث مال كثير ومخطط يهرب معها .
- Yoebright أكتشف ان زوجها المصون نآوي يهرب مع Eustacia وراحت وقآلت لـ Clym على أمل أنه يوقفهم . لكن Clym لآزال عنده امل أن Eustacia بترجع له فرآح يسرع عشان يرجعها .
و يوبرآيت تلقت مسآعده من اللي يحبهـآ Venn عشان تقدر توصل لـ Eustacia & Wildeve .
- لما وصلو Venn و Yoebright أكتشفوآ أن Eustacia بتطيح بالسياج وان Clym & Wildeve يحآولوآ ينقذوهآ .. Venn حـآول يسآعدهم بس بالنهايه ماتت Eustacia & Wildeve .
مين بقى من الشخصيآت ؟
- Clym
- Diggory Venn
- Thomasin Yoebright
بعد سنه من الأحدآث ., Diggory Venn تواصل مع Clym & Yoebright اللي كانو يعيشو مع بعض بما انهم أولاد عمه .. كانو يعيشو بـ Blooms-End .
Venn مآ عـآد Reddleman < وش هالوظيفه مادري .. بس مزارع ..
- رجع صّرح بحبها لـ Thomasin Yoebright وأخيرآ قبلت بحبه .. وتقدم للزواج .. وتزوجوآ .. < وأخيرآ خخ ..
- Clym انتهى وحييد .. والي صـآر بالنهايه أعمى .
وسلآمتكم ..

Darkness
Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
Darkness is used a bit like a clock in The Return of the Native – it signals the time of day as well as the time of year, as when we hear about "the dark hue of the winter period, representing night" (4.1.1). But, aside from letting us know the time of day and year, and other than making the first few chapters of the novel especially creepy, what's the deal with all the darkness?
Hardy begins with and hits many of its dramatic high points (namely death scenes) at night. Darkness becomes a location for secrets, danger, and death. So darkness does a lot to set the overall tone of the novel. If the novel had started off with a scene of sunshine and rainbows, we'd expect something very different. Instead, we get clued in from the get-go that this is not going to be a happy read.
Darkness is also tied very closely to Eustacia's character, especially her hair:
To see her hair was to fancy that a whole winter did not contain darkness enough to form its shadow: it closed over her forehead like nightfall extinguishing the western glow. (1.7.2)
Eustacia's hair represents winter and night here, once again linking time and darkness. The image of "nightfall" covering Eustacia's forehead also alludes to how moody and depressed this girl is. Eustacia has a rather "dark" personality, and her outward appearance reflects that. Her outward appearance also reflects the heath at night, which is a place of mysteriousness and danger. In the sentence about Eustacia, words like "extinguished" and "shadow" have a negative connotation, or meaning, and imply that the darkness is somehow dangerous and bad.
So darkness isn't looking so good here – it seems kind of shifty. But it also represents another, less negative thing in the story – the past. Once again, darkness is tied to time, but in this case we're talking about ancient history. Most of the references we get to the ancient past occur at night, sort of literally connecting us back to the dark ages (check out the references to "ancient bonfires" at 1.3.7). But the ancient past itself is sort of automatically tied to the idea of death and loss, and it's often presented in a creepy way. Overall, darkness symbolizes a lot of different things, from individual character traits to ideas of time. But, above all else, darkness functions as a sort of tone-setter throughout the novel and generally creates scenes filled with foreboding, or warnings of doom.
Birds
Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
Birds are strongly linked Thomasin Yeobright in the novel.
In her movements, in her gaze, she reminded the beholder of a feathered creature who lived around [Mrs. Yeobright's] home. All similes and allegories concerning her began and ended with birds. There was as much variety in her motions as in their flight. (3.6.23)
Looking at Thomasin in terms of this symbol can help us get a better grasp on her character, which is otherwise a bit hard to pin down. We don't see Thomasin a lot in the book, even though she's one of the major characters. So how can birds help us understand her?
Well, birds have both negative and positive ideas associated with them. Let's start off with the negative, so we can end on a happier note. Birds are associated with ideas of cages and entrapment, and also vulnerability (birds are often delicate and fragile). We see evidence of how Thomasin is trapped and made vulnerable by her ill-advised marriage to Damon:
"I want some money, you know, aunt [...] and he doesn't give me any. I don't like to ask him, and yet, perhaps, he doesn't give it to me because, he doesn't know. Ought I to mention it to him, aunt?" (3.6.29)
Themes and imagery of entrapment appear through birds in another notable scene as well, though this one involves Thomasin's aunt and not Thomasin herself, directly at least.
The only living thing that entered now was a sparrow, and seeing no movements to cause alarm, he hopped boldly around the room. [...] This roused the lonely sitter, who got up, released the bird, and went to the door. She was expecting Thomasin [...]. (3.7.1)
What's interesting is that this sparrow is trapped and lost in Mrs. Yeobright's home, just as Mrs. Yeobright herself is, in a way – she is sort of isolated through her own stubbornness in this scene. But the bird also helps to draw Mrs. Yeobright out of her own depression and gets her to take some action. In a way, this bird has a liberating effect on her, since it "frees" her from her morose thoughts, temporarily at least.
This brings us to the more positive aspects of birds: freedom and movement.
Feathered species sojourned here in hiding which would have created wonder if found elsewhere. [...] A traveller who should walk and observe any of these visitants as Venn observed them now could feel himself to be in direct communication with regions unknown to man. [...] But the bird, like many other philosophers, seemed as he looked at the reddleman to think that a present moment of comfortable reality was worth a decade of memories. (1.10.1-3)
We see here how birds have a sort of positive, even otherworldly, energy associated with them. Birds prompt Diggory to think about looking for happiness in the present and to ponder things beyond his immediate surroundings, much as the sparrow did for Mrs. Yeobright.
The birds also subtly represent Thomasin here as well, since Diggory's past is largely about Thomasin and his present and future happiness hinge upon her. In a way, Thomasin, like these birds, might have a sort of emotional freedom and inner calmness that comes from her practicality and her ability to live in the present and in harmony with nature, like the birds.
Overall, birds are largely feminine in the novel and the opposing things they represent, entrapment and freedom, really capture the difficult status of women in this novel and in the Victorian era.
Paris
Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
Say the word "Paris" to someone, and they'll probably conjure up a knee-jerk image of, say, a romantic sidewalk café and people in berets drinking coffee. Eustacia has this reaction, only a hundred times more intense. For her, Paris represents everything she wants out of life: luxury, adventure, culture, and romance.
A young and clever man was coming in to that lonely heath from, of all contrasting places in the world, Paris. It was like a man coming from heaven. [...] This was the obscure, remote spot to which was about to return a man whose latter life had been passed in the French capital – the center and vortex of the fashionable world. (2.1.28-31)
[S]he had represented Paris, and not Budmouth, to her grandfather as in all likelihood their future home. Her hopes were bound up in this dream. In the quiet days since their marriage, when Yeobright had been pouring over her lips, her eyes, and the lines of her face, she had mused and mused on the subject, even while in the act of returning his gaze. (4.1.4)
We can really see the disjunction present in Clym and Eustacia's relationship here. When she sees him, all she can think of is Paris; he's sort of like a means to an end for her. Clym, meanwhile, is extremely physically attracted to Eustacia.
So "Paris" the word represents a whole host of longing and desires for Eustacia. Paris greatly contrasts to the heath, which is why Eustacia longs for it so darn badly. As such, it also represents the entire outside world, particularly the more modern and urban world Eustacia longs to join. Paris, for Eustacia, represents the entire world outside the heath.
This makes Clym's return from Paris all the more interesting – we can see how Clym, returning from the "wider world" makes Eustacia fall in love with him. And we can also see how the reality of Clym and Paris causes a lot of grief for Eustacia, who had been clinging to a dream world, represented by a Paris that never really existed in the first place.
Bonfires

We kick off the novel with a bunch of bonfires, which are not just for dramatic effect – they set up a lot of the novel's themes. Bonfires are tied to the past and to history and give us a sense of the Egdon community. But we want to discuss two other major symbols here.
First, the bonfires at the start of the novel kind of act like lights on a stage.
Red suns and tufts of fire one by one began to arise, flecking the whole country round. They were the bonfires of other parishes and hamlets that were engaged in the same sot of commemoration. Some were distant, and stood in a dense atmosphere, so that bundles of pale strawlike beams radiated around them in the shape of a fan. Some were large and neat, glowing scarlet-red from the shade, like wounds in a black hide. (1.3.4)
Hardy sure knows how to rock out the descriptive imagery when he gets going. Props, Hardy, props.
So, given how many theatrical elements exist in this novel, it makes sense that we'd have a set of metaphorical stage lights turn on and light up the darkened heath, which is for all intents and purposes the stage of the novel. The novel has a lot of stylistic and structural ties to the theater, especially Greek dramas and tragedies. Greek plays were generally performed outside in amphitheaters, and this idea of an outdoor, natural stage setting runs throughout the novel and reinforces the idea of bonfire as stage lights.
But bonfires also act as another, perhaps more significant, kind of light in the novel: signal lights. Bonfires are the primary secret signal between Eustacia and Damon and we have multiple scenes in which they light a bonfire and have a clandestine, or secret, meeting. The description of this signal bonfire is very telling.
[T]his was the nearest of any, the moon of the whole shining throng. It lay in a direction precisely opposite to that of the little window in the vale below. [...] This quiet eye had attracted attention from time to time [...]. (1.3.117)
We can see here how bonfires act as eyes in a way – they help others to see what's around them and they call the attention of those at a distance.
Water
Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
Water, and ponds especially, are hot hang-out spots in this book, particularly favored by Eustacia. She often meets Damon by the pond near her grandfather's home.
But Eustacia also has one of her earliest, face-to-face meetings with Clym by a well. In fact, the reason that Clym is there in the first place is because the Vyes' bucket has fallen into the well and they have no access to drinking water. However, Clym and others point out that the Vyes could make do with the pond water until they got a new bucket for the well.
"That's the only kind of water we have," she continued, tossing a stone into the pool, which lay on the outside of the bank like the white of an eye without a pupil. The stone fell with a flounce, but no Wildeve appeared on the other side [...]. (3.3.45)
In a way, Eustacia is symbolically acting out her love life with water – by turning down the pond water she's in a sense refusing her link to Damon and choosing Clym instead. And Damon is, of course, a very real presence in that scene with Clym. Eustacia throws a rock as a signal, though it seems she's hoping to catch the attention of someone other than Damon now.
Given how closely water is tied to Eustacia and her decisions (to see or not to see Damon, mainly), it makes sense that water would also be the scene of Eustacia's mysterious death. Did Eustacia choose suicide or did she fall into the stormy water by accident? The question is never really answered. The confusion surrounding her watery demise is fitting, though, given how choices in this novel are never clear-cut either.
Water also plays a huge role in the final moments before Eustacia drowns. She wanders in the rain, ruminating over her life and her life choices.
The moon and stars were closed up by cloud and rain to the degree of extinction. It was a night which led the traveler's thoughts instinctively to dwell on nocturnal scenes of disaster in the chronicles of the world. [...] Never was harmony more perfect than that between the chaos of her mind and the chaos of the world without. (5.7.17)
Water, like many of the symbols in this novel, has both positive and negative aspects attached to it. Water is life-giving and healing, but also deadly and dangerous. So it's fitting that such a complex symbol would be attached to a complicated theme like choices, especially to Eustacia's choices.
Sight and Vision

This might be the most significant motif, or a running theme, in the entire novel. Given how huge this theme is, we're going to tackle four separate instances where sight comes into play in order to see just how varied this theme is in the novel.
First, we'll start off with the most notable example of the theme of sight: Clym's blindness. Sight is crucial to understanding Clym's character and his loss of vision is no accident on the part of the author.
Amid these jarring events Yeobright felt one thing to be indispensable – that he should speedily make some show of progress in his scholastic plan. With this view he read far into the small hours during many nights. [...] Fretting with impatience at this interruption to a task he was so anxious to hasten, Clym was transformed into an invalid. (4.2.36)
Clym got so focused on one thing that he lost sight of everything else around him. And this metaphorical shortsightedness translates itself into a literal blindness.
His daily life was of a curious microscopic sort, his whole world being limited to a circuit a few feet from his person. (4.2.57)
Clym certainly isn't the only character to have vision problems; in fact, many other characters suffer from similar sorts of myopia, or limited vision. These appear in different ways, though. Take Eustacia, for example – unlike Clym, who sees only what's immediately in front of him, or doesn't see at all, Eustacia sees things that aren't even there: "Involved in these imaginings she knew nothing of time. When she became conscious of externals it was dusk" (2.1.30). Eustacia's rich inner fantasy life tends to spill over into her actual life and literally disrupts her vision. As with Clym, the inability to see clearly causes a lot of anguish, or pain and suffering.
Yet another example of not seeing well comes with Mrs. Yeobright. In her case, she sees just fine, but she completely misinterprets what she sees, which causes a lot of problems too:
Her eyes were on the ground; within her two sights were graven – that of Clym's hook and brambles at the door, and that of a woman's face at the window. (4.6.64)
Mrs. Yeobright jumps to a hasty conclusion based on what she thinks she's seeing. And this tendency to misinterpret things or to draw hasty conclusions is a pronounced character trait in Mrs. Yeobright. We see this especially with her reaction to Clym's relationship with Eustacia – she instantly assumes the worst about Eustacia based on limited information and her own emotions, namely fear and jealousy.
So vision is a very unreliable thing in this novel. Characters constantly see the wrong thing or fail to fully understand what they're seeing, which is perhaps the most important thematic point here. Sight is only as good as someone's interpretation of it, and the characters here have a very hard time correctly understanding the things they see.
Hourglass and Telescope

When we meet Eustacia, we learn that she's carrying two rather unusual items with her: an hourglass and a telescope.
For the rest, she suffered much from depression of spirits, and took slow walks to recover them, in which she carried her grandfather's telescope and her grandmother's hour-glass – the latter because of a peculiar pleasure she derived from watching a material representation of time's gradual slide away. (1.7.22)
So what's up with these two objects? Well, these two symbolic objects represent two of the books major themes and help us explore Eustacia's relationship with these themes. These objects stand for time and sight.
Let's start off with the hourglass. Eustacia gets a weird kick out of watching time physically slide away, perhaps because it means that yet another terrible day on the heath is over for her. But what else is going on with this symbol?
[T]he middle article being the old hour-glass, and the other two a pair of ancient British urns which ha been dug from a barrow near, and were used as flower-pots for two razor-leaved cactuses. (2.4.4)
The hourglass here is surrounded by old, historic objects – ancient urns and cacti that seem like prehistoric plant life. But why is the hourglass connected to the past? Well, an hourglass is a rather old-fashioned way to tell time – there were clocks back in Hardy's day. In fact, Victorians really loved their new-fangled clocks. Time wasn't measured by the natural world as much anymore and cities began to run on different sorts of time than the countryside still did. And Eustacia isn't so divorced from the modern world that she relies solely on an hourglass to tell time; she actually carries a watch with her (1.6.13). The fact that she still favors using an hourglass gives us some insight into how Eustacia approaches time.
First, Eustacia's use of an hourglass points to her situation on the heath – an old-fashioned and isolated place. Ironically, Eustacia longs to escape the heath, yet she definitely has an old-fashioned vibe. So Eustacia's approach to time may point to her counter-cultural tendencies and her penchant for going against the crowd. Likewise, as we noted earlier, the hourglass's physical representation of time passing appeals to Eustacia's sad and thoughtful nature; she likes to dwell on things, and the hourglass really lets her dwell on time's passage.
The telescope is a bit more obvious than the hourglass. After all, Eustacia uses it to spy on people, so the telescope's ties to the theme of sight are pretty straightforward. However, this idea of spying gives us further insight into Eustacia's character.
She lifted her left hand, which held a closed telescope. This she rapidly extended, as if she were well accustomed to the operation, and raising it to her eye directed it towards the light beaming from the inn. (1.6.10)
Eustacia tends to set herself apart from people – she eavesdrops and crashes a party in disguise before finally meeting Clym (the object of her stalking) face-to-face. Eustacia often does things in a very roundabout way and the telescope points to her tendencies here. She spies on people, she engages in subterfuge and secret meetings, and the girl likes to be sneaky. All these things indicate a very imaginative and romantic personality, which ties back to Eustacia's tendency to confuse fantasy and reality. The things Eustacia sees aren't always reality and her fondness for viewing stuff via a telescope point to her fondness for "seeing" things as romantic when there might not be any there.
