&Oslash;

The poem is about a duke called Alfonso II of the house of East. This is a story that Browning read in one of the old books of Italy about a duke who married a young wife and this wife displeases him and then she disappears. During that period of time in the 15th century if a wife displeases her husband or accused of adultery, he has the right to send her to a convent or monastery to spend all her life there like imprisonment.
&Oslash; In the poem we have a duke who speaks to another person who is the envoy or the representative of a count who is lesser in rank than the duke. He was sent to the duke to arrange a marriage that the girl has to pay a dowry to the husband. The duke is receiving the representative of the count to arrange the marriage affair. They discuss the dowry and estate and so on. The duke also tells the representative what does he wishes in his wife. He asks him alone to go upstairs with him then the duke reveals the curtains from the portrait of the last duchess.
&Oslash;

In the portrait, there is a beautiful lady with living feature and blush on her cheeks. The duke asks the envoy to sit down and he starts to speak. Through out the speech we understand a lot about his character as well as his wife’s character. He talks about his wife and how she displeased him by her childish behavior. She was young, immature or how to treat him. He was not satisfied with her so he gave commands to execute her by sending her to a convent. He ordered her death and now he is planning for another marriage. In order to arrange for another marriage, he called for the representative showing him the picture of his executed wife and discussing the marriage.
&Oslash; It a shocking revelation of the great, aristocratic, well educated, very attractive and rich when we hear his confession of murder. Then it is shocking again for the reader when he arranges for another marriage.

&Oslash; In the first lines the speaker shows the work of art to the envoy. The painting looks as if it is a living thing which means that it is a very good work of art. The duke reduces that woman in the painting into something. She is a thing for him and only a piece of art. He is not talking about the woman who was his wife but about the work of art. He himself judges the work of art. That means that he is also an artist as he has a good taste in art. He is himself can judge a work of art. He is only interested in the work of art not the woman.

&Oslash;

The painter who created this art was called Fra Pandolf was known at that time. There is a mocking tone when the duke shows how the painter worked hard to finish the painting. This hurry was because he wanted to command her end. He ordered a great painter to paint her so he can imprison the life in a work of art. The duke invites the envoy to sit to hear more revelation. He also invites us as readers to sit and look at the work of art.


Will't please you sit and look at her? I said

&Oslash; The representative is only a listener and obeys. He repeats the name of the painter to confirm that this is a great artist who created this work of art. The duke is the only one allowed to draw the curtains. The portrait is covered which shows that there is something suspicious and he is an authoritative person. He is so possessive not allowing any one to see it even the servants.


And seemed as they would ask me, if they durst,
How such a glance came there; so, not the first
Are you to turn and ask thus. Sir, 'twas not
&Oslash; Strangers were never allowed to see this portrait. Countenance is the facial feature. There is life and depth of passion; this shows that he was very jealous. The picture is alive. The envoy did not ask or dare to ask about the picture but the duke sees the questions in his eyes about the portrait. The duke tells him that he does not dare to ask but the duke will tell him by himself.

Mathew Arnold

&Oslash;

Mathew Arnold is the third major Victorian poet in this period. He is a well educated scholar. He was born in 1822 and died in 1888. He is a major poet and critic and his influence continued to the following century. Mathew Arnold is the son of Dr. Thomas Arnold the Head master of the Rugby School. He attended college. He enjoyed the life of being a dandy who is well concerned about his appearance, behavior and manners. He was a very intelligent young man, but he enjoyed this kind of a different life that reflected the real person of him. He was interested more in his appearance but he was a very intelligent young man.
&Oslash; After his graduation, he worked as an inspector of schools allover England. He used to travel to different parts of England inspecting schools, following and detecting the curriculum in them and trying to adjust them. During this period of time, he wrote most of his poems. He was interested in reflecting nature. The Victorian period is a period which is marked by rapid change, development, controversial and diversity.
&Oslash;

He was the best poet to represent his age by talking about the theme of faith, doubt and ennui (boredom). In his works, he tried to reflect his age by writing several collections. In these collections of poems, he tried to reflect the characteristics of this time. He was a deep thinker and was very philosophical at the same time. He was not only interested in writing poetry, but also in critical thinking and criticism. He started to develop the ability to be a critic towards the end of his life. He wrote many critical treaties or pamphlets. One of his major works was Culture and Anarchy. This is a very significant work in criticism. In his critical thinking, he tried to show the significance of poetry as something could be a substitute for faith.
&Oslash; Loss of faith was a very important issue that occurred during the Victorian age. People had shaken faith as a result of scientific inventions, astrology discoveries and philosophical thinking. People tend to search for another substitute or a replacement for their faith. Mathew Arnold found that poetry could be like a new religion. He is a religious man, but because of the shaken belief, he felt that poetry could be a substitute for religion. For him, poetry is very significant.
&Oslash; One of his treaties was “The disease of most of modern scientists is depression…”. Another one is “Arnold’s poetry and his poetics form …marks his inner division…not to facilitate…that maybe”. Of course that may have led him to a sense of losing his own faith because of the conflict that happened inside him. When he explicate religion according to him, he says: “It has lighted up morality that it has ..emotion and …for carrying the ordinary man along it ..”.
&Oslash;

We are introduced to a poet who has a critical mind, who has faced himself in a kind of a conflict. The conflict was between his faith towards the traditional Christian faith and to the new changing world. This is what is reflected in the poem. He faces this dilemma of being in this struggle between his own faith and the changing world where he lives in of suspicion, skepticism and all what surround him and how he find a solution for that conflict. He must make a compromise between the two choices or a kind of a balance.
&Oslash; Towards the end of his life, Arnold stopped writing poetry and he concentrated more on criticism. He became a very well established critic. His poems were few in comparison to the other poets. That is because towards 1860 he started to concentrate on criticism.
&Oslash; Dover Beach is one of the significant poems that reflect the Victorian mind. It is a presentation of all the thinking minds in the Victorian period that of the people who faced this dilemma of conflict between the faith and the life during that age. The poem is a dramatic monologue. It is rich with expression and elaborate in its tone. It reflects the Victorian mind of that period.

&Oslash; Dover is in the southern part of England. ‘strait’ means the narrow passage that make water pass between two different lands. The speaker is the poet himself. The speaker here is melancholic in his tone. This is shown when he talks about the calmness of the sea.
&Oslash; He says “come and listen” so there is some one else. This is a dramatic monologue where we have a speaker who is speaking and there is an audience but the audiences are not responding. He only addresses them “come and listen”.
&Oslash; He talks about the sea of faith. He talks about a critical point. Faith starts to lose its power. It is shaken. The relation between faith and sea is that the sea comes and go, strong and powerful then they retreating back. When the sea is not strong, the waves become slowly and barely come to the beach, and then they retreat.
&Oslash; The mode of the poem is melancholic. In the beginning of the poem, we feel calmness and stability, and then there is the movement of the sea. The speaker here alludes to Sophocles the great Greek tragedian.

&Oslash; The speaker here is in the modern period of Victorian time watching the sea, contemplating. He alludes to Sophocles and Aegean sea. Sophocles talked about the human misery. The human misery is in the past, present and going to be in the future. Sophocles talked about sadness of humanity. Then Mathew moved into the sea of faith.

Analysis







During the Victorian period according all the historic data, faith started to lose its stability and power. During the 16th and 17th century the church dominated the whole kingdom, but now faith is shaken. It is like the sea that is coming and retreating back. At the end he concludes by a resolution that is faith is lost and shaken, how can man survive without faith. He says that honesty and faithfulness could substitute the loss of faith.

&Oslash; Dover beach is located to the southern of England. It is the closest point to face the French coast. The speaker starts in a meditative tone. He meditates deeply about the calm sea. There is serenity and quietness as the waves are not very rough. This mode of calmness encourages one to meditate, speculate and think deeply about life. It is a romantic atmosphere, but at the same time, it helps one to think deeply in a philosophical mood.
&Oslash; The tide is full means that the waves come from the mid of the sea until they reach the shore. The waves usually are originated from the bottom of the sea. Then they reach until they reach the shore. The sea is calm and the moon is bright. The sea is stable which means that nature is stable and calm.
&Oslash;

The speaker wishes to have such calmness and serenity in himself. He is in conflict suffering from something. He could see the French coast. On it he could see the lights gleam then go. Those lights are moving as if they disturb the quietness of this serene nature.
&Oslash; Dover is a mountain area that means it is higher than the French coast. The cliffs of England stand that shows the sense of pride. They are shining because of the light of the moon falling on the sea and the mountains. The mountains contain minerals and rocks could be shining. The French coast disturbs the serene picture of the Dover beach.
&Oslash; In those first five lines, the speaker meditates upon the peaceful tranquil, peaceful nature. This shows that he wishes to have the same peaceful nature.

&Oslash; The speaker invites someone else. Arnold after he married his wife, he went to Dover to spend the honey moon with his wife. He invites the companion or his beloved to come. First, he talks about the beautiful nature then he invites another human being. It is like an intrusion. The invitation of the beloved or friend is to share the beauty of nature. It is a very tender appeal from the speaker to his companion.

&Oslash; The speaker then addresses his companion again to listen. First, he invited his companion to come and enjoy the fresh air. Then he invites her to hear the loud voice of the sea. Pebbles are the small and tiny stones. When the waves come and reach the shore, they carry those tiny stones with them. When they go forward, they throw the stones upon the shore and this creates the sound of waves. Metaphorically, those small stones make that roar. It is exaggeration. The waves take those pebbles and then through them again. To ‘fling’ is to throw with force. It is a continuous cycle as the waves draw the stones back and then when they return, they return them.
&Oslash;

This cycle of movement is something continuous. It reminds the speaker of sadness. The poet here renders this noise and movement to something wonderful, rich, beautiful and full of meanings. This sadness comes out of the clash between faith and science.
&Oslash; There is always a clash between the waves and the land. When waves are very energetic and strong, they hit the land and take the peddles then they bring them back. It is like a mutual relationship. They are connected together and cannot be separated. The waves, here with their continuous movement, represent the sense of confusion. The sea is powerful and the land is also solid and powerful.

&Oslash; In this stanza, the speaker here has changed the meditation about the sea and its sound into referring to something back in the history talking about Sophocles the great Greek tragedian. Sophocles heard the sound of waves and it reminded him also of human misery. This sound extends from ages and it is opt to continue for the future. It is immortal in a way. Sophocles heard it a long ago in the Aegean sea. ‘Turbid’ means confuse.
&Oslash;

There is a change of scenery. First we were in England in the northern part of Europe and then the speaker moves to the southern part of Europe. It is not only a transition in location but also in time, but it was smooth not abrupt. Sophocles heard this sound and it reminded him of the ebbs and flows of the human nature. All his tragedies were about the human sadness. There is a movement from the peaceful and tranquil nature that reminded the speaker of the eternal note of sadness to the human history to a figure who also talked about the human the sadness of humanism.
&Oslash; Then the speaker uses the present simple again after using the past. The pronoun ‘we’ shows that it is not only Sophocles who found in this sound a representation of human misery but also modern people in the north and Sophocles is in the south, but they still share the same sadness as they are all human beings. So they share this eternal note of sadness.
&Oslash; This stanza is like an interlude. There is a change in the scenery. In the Aegean sea, we have a scene of past human misery. We feel that the past, the present as well as the future all share the same human misery.

&Oslash; This is the climatic stanza in the poem. “sea of faith” is symbolic here. The sea is symbolized by faith. It is sometimes strong and sometimes retreats. It is like faith in human beings. It is changing according to people according to their belief and acceptance. When he talks about the sea of faith, he says that the sea was strong in the past by dominating man’s life. Reflecting the Victorian mind, he says that faith now is shaken by sciences, discoveries and theory of revolution and continuing, frustrating change. Now, life became very fast, so there are a lot of changes that man can not absorb.
&Oslash; He uses past tense when he says that in the past, faith was strong. The idea of the image is that faith in the past was like the circle that circles the diamond and holds it. It was surrounding the earth like the sea surrounding the earth. There is a simile here that the sea was very close to the shore. The word ‘girdle’ is like a belt to roll up tight or like a diamond ring that one has to circle it or put holders to hold it. In the past, faith was holding man’s life controlling and forming it. The sea of faith was once at the full and rounded earth shore, but now it is weakening similar to the weak waves.
&Oslash;

When it is the ebb of the waves, one could see the shore hidden under the water and species crawling because they are exposed as there is no water after retreating back. The sea of faith was surrounding earth in the past like ring or belt but now the speaker only hears the water retreats back that means that faith has become weak.
&Oslash; There is a slow movement of the speaker’s tone which reveals the withdrawal of the sea of faith. It is not strong as it was before. The sea of faith is a symbol of time when religion was very strong without conflict or doubt, it was holding man’s life. Unfortunately, now it has become weak because of the change. This brings a point that modernity unfortunately, weakens faith or religion.
&Oslash; What happens actually is that the religious faith is retreating. Here, he means by faith any kind of ideas that can make life meaningful. So man is losing meaning of his life, because life without faith is meaningless and it could bring doubt into life.
&Oslash; This stanza is the core or the heart of the poem. One could feel many things in this stanza like the feeling of pain, mutability. There is the theme of faith and theme of mutability.
&Oslash; The speaker through his meditation and elaborate comments on the world that he lives in, that he is convinced that Christianity is fading away and weakening. Once it was very strong, it was dominating the universe. Now it is weakening by the power of science. That is because of man without strong faith whose faith is always shaken.

&Oslash; This is the resolution of this problem after this melancholic meditation about how faith is losing its power which is honesty. Then there is a direct invitation to his beloved to be honest and truthful to each other. He appeals to her with great emotional honesty to be truthful to one another. He gives reason that is they live in the land of dreams. These lands of dreams are so attractive but they are full of diversity. It is full of attractions and beauty and new things. However this land has no joy, love, light, certitude, peace or reality. They are living on this land as if living in a dark place. A world with no faith is a dark world. They are confusing and fighting.
&Oslash; Arnold here is alluding to a Greek episode about two armies. Each one was retreating to its camp and because of the wavy sea, one of the soldiers heard the sound of peddles against the shore and though that it was the enemy. He announced the alarm that the enemy was coming and it was at night. It was the same army fighting each others thinking it was the enemy in the dark. It was a tragedy. It is a historical allusion.
&Oslash; The use of the allusion here is that man in this life without a fate is going to be lost as there is no guidance. Without faith, man is misled.
&Oslash;

He appeals to his beloved to be honest to each other because this honesty will support them and sustain this changing world. The allusion to the battle is also to show that man can not survive alone, but he needs help from other humans to support him.
&Oslash; The speaker’s tone changes from a melancholic one to an appealing tone. In this dramatic monologue, Arnold meditates in a very philosophical mood upon the calm nature which suggests the meaningless struggle and loss of faith that is found in his society.
&Oslash; The poem reveals the poet in a conflict and loss of faith. At the beginning, there was a temporary vision of peaceful mood, but the sounds of the ocean reminded him of human sadness.
&Oslash; This poem is of four stanzas and they are not the same. The first is 14 lines, the second is 6 lines, the third is 8 lines and the last one is 9 lines. That is because the speaker is in a state of meditation. The imagery is very significant. The rhythm is very slow. In lines 9, 10 and 11 they are fast. The tone in general is melancholic, but towards the end, the tone tends to be an appealing one.
&Oslash; A critic called Petman considers the stanzas of this poem as sonnets but incomplete sonnets. Notice the exclamation marks in 6, 9 to give an opposite effect. In 6 the exclamation is not for auditory only but also to visual for the beauty of nature. In 9 the concentration is to listen of the roar.

Now we talk about the technicality of the poem, the poem is a dramatic monologue : a poem in which it has certain techniques, first of all there is a character who speaks and reveals his own not the poet , the poet here is objective , he creates a character and it is the character who speaks , it is the revelation of the character not the creator , there is one listener but there is no interference, the audience her are silent in My Last Duchess , we have the messenger who was sitting and listening while the duke speaks , sometimes there is an interconnection between the speaker and the audience and sometimes there isn't any contact.
In that speech the speaker reveals his identity, he reveals hid deep psychological traits even if he does not know that because he speaks ex.: " this grew I gave command…" we as readers realize that he is confessing his murder, the monologue reveals the deep hidden secrets of the speaker.
Technically the poet dose not communicate with the character ,there are no interference or analytical details , because the poet is like a creator , he creates a character and he lets the character grow in his revelation.
Monologues originally are parts of plays, but the poet developed this monologue to be a unit in a verse form. The dramatic monologue developed highly in the Victorian period , then browning is the major poet who developed the dramatic monologue to its highest point of achievement , which actually paved the way towards what is known in literature as the stream of consciousness in the novel which means that the character speaks and travels through time, then it developed to interior dramatic monologue.
If you study the character of the duke you will find extraordinary things that are contradicting each other and they are combined .
Let's talk about of his characteristics:
He covers the portrait with curtains because he is selfish and possessive, he wants all of the smiles to be only for him. He wants a wife who is only faithful to him because he sees himself as a god figure. He wants to transfer her behavior according to his wishes.
Jealousy, this is a major characteristic, he does not want her to smile to anyone , even as a dead work of art he is jealous of her smiles, he is jealous of her attention to others, mixture of pride and jealousy when he said that she flushes because of the comment of the painter. For him she is like an object because he is so possessive , he is in the center and everything revolves around him.
He is an authoritative kind of a character, in the command to the painter to present his work, people obey his commands because he is a man of absolute power people fear him, when he speaks to the envoy we feel his authorities voice although he is being polite, even though he imprisoned his wife in a portrait he controls her smile, his use of possessive pronouns , I , my, shows authority and control , he could not control his wife in her life so he controlled her after death by displaying her in his art gallery by covering and burying her under the curtains an indication of burying her under the ground.
Hypocrisy, when he says that he cares only for the character of the new wife but he is not being honest because he does care for the money, because the money gives him power and control, money will allow him to buy more works of art because he is aesthetic, this is why he is extraordinary and an attractive character. As we know people of art are very sensitive people, but here we see a ruthless man who has a combination of an artist .
He is a suspicious person he condemned her without giving her a chance to defend herself .
He is a proud, he is proud of his name "900 hundred years name..", he feels that directing his wife is stooping, he does not want her to treat him like everybody else, because he sees that he is different and arrogant person.
He is a great lover of art when he talks about the sculpture of Neptune and that it was made especially for him.
He is cold and cruel, he confesses killing his wife and then thinks of remarrying .
Madness, is he really stabled or mad , he is psychologically disturbed , is he a sadist??? NO.
Do you think he is intelligent or stupid ???
He is highly intelligent .."will it please you rise.." high aristocratic manners , all of these manners assert his superiority , these traits show a well balanced person , on the contrary he is dominant ,ruthless , cruel, jealous and materialistic , look at all these paradoxical characteristics , the duke combines aesthetic pried and sense of superiority to end his wife's life .

What kind of a character is Ulysses??? He has one major character that he is proud of himself. Is his pride similar to the duke's??? NO, he is proud because he has a great history of victory he is a warrior , he is a man of honor , who has done great achievements in the field of war ,because of his great ethics , a man with great values of life , and he deserves to be proud of his achievements, he is an ambitions man because he wants to accomplish the best in life, he is wise because he did not follow his dreams neglecting others, before leaving he chose a wise person to rule the country while he is away , he is humble , decent, a man who knows himself very well as well as others, very reasonable fare caring person .

Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister
What is a soliloquy ??? it is when a character speaks inwardly , it is a kind of a monologue in which we have a speaker confessing his inner thoughts , and we as reader can see through, the speaker here does not address an audience, he is soliloquizing within himself , we have the setting which is in a garden , in the garden there are 2 monks in a monastery it is the garden of a church, one is named brother Lawrence, the other monk is watching him and soliloquizing, through his soliloquy we could understand the characteristics of both brother Lawrence and the other mink who speaks .
We could see accusations the speaker is accusing brother Lawrence of certain evils , and through his speech we discover that these accusations are not true ex. He accuses brother Lawrence of not being a religious man reading lustrous immoral novels , he is accusing brother Lawrence of things that are actually his and we learn at the end that this is all because of jealousy , because of malicious feelings , he has one of the deadly sins which is envy.
The poem is written in a very sarcastic mocking tone , browning is writing this poem in order to criticize the hypocrisy in the Victorian society , because the poem is talking about monks in the Spanish cloister inwardly he is talking about the hypocrisy of religious people.
Gr-r-r — there go, my heart’s abhorrence!


Abhorrence= extreme hatred, Gr-r-r, similar to the growling of the animals

Water your damned flower-pots, do!


He is addressing brother Lawrence , he is watering each plant this is an exhausting job, now working on the land is a very humble job, even the flowers are damned, the word damned is a horrible word especially when its pronounced from religious people

If hate killed men, Brother Lawrence,
God’s blood, would not mine kill you!


These are the most horrible words said, hatred can kill the same person that has this feeling but it does not kill others , he wishes brother Lawrence to die because he hates him very much this opening of the poem makes us wonder why he hate brother Lawrence what is the reason for all this hatred , this is a technique that creates a lot of excitement and suspense

What? your myrtle-bush wants trimming?

Look at these question marks, these are not questions , these are used for intense sarcasm and irony and mockery , he is mocking brother Lawrence , he says your bush needs trimming , this shows that brother Lawrence is a keen worker and a lover of working in the garden, so he is very loyal to his work, the other monk is making fun of the way brother Lawrence does his work.

Oh, that rose has prior claims —
Needs its leaden vase filled brimming?
Hell dry you up with its flames!


He curses brother Lawrence for such tentative work, we can feel the envy in him, because brother Lawrence is very accurate in doing his work, envy is one of the seven deadly sins. So in the first stanza we have great emotions reveled by the speaker , emotions of hatred , jealousy , evil emotions are expressed , these emotions shows that the speaker is very envious of brother Lawrence and his work in the garden
At the meal we sit together;
Salve tibi! I must hear
Wise talk of the kind of weather,
Sort of season, time of year:
Not a plenteous cork-crop: scarcely
Dare we hope oak-galls, I doubt;
What’s the Latin name for “parsley?”
What’s the Greek name for Swine’s Snout?
Now the speaker starts to list the accusations , one of these accusations is that , when the monks sit together at the table for dinner or lunch because they have to eat together , so meal times are a very sacred moments for the monks , because they sit together and perform a sacred ritual before having the meal , and this is some kind of a social activity between all of the monks , after the prayers they will eat their meal and they would chat with each other , brother Lawrence is a skilful communicator with every one , he would start the communication and the speaker monk is jealous from him. Salve tibi = a kind of praise for god before he begins his speech , before you start a speech you start by asking about the weather and how is the speaker doing…brother Lawrence is so good speaker that he could guide the speech and the conversation of the meal till the end , and this frustrate the soliloquist= the monk , so it is not only the general talk about the weather but things at a more higher level , because brother Lawrence if anyone asks him about anything such as words in Latin and Greek, he is able to answer and this shows that brother Lawrence is a well educated person. Brother Lawrence can talk about almost anything even the kind of trees. crop = outer part of the oak tree used to observe ink or colors. oak-galls = talking about the abnormal growth of oak trees , because oak trees are mighty huge. What’s the Latin name for “parsley?” = he is trying to be sarcastic , mocking the knowledge of brother Lawrence, Swine’s Snout= another kind of plant.
So in the 2nd stanza the speaker starts to list the accusations that brother Lawrence is the only one who speaks on the table , he is insinuating that brother Lawrence do not allow anyone to speak but on the contrary brother Lawrence starts the conversation and he is the center of attention , because he is a source of information for everybody , and everybody enjoys this conversation .

Whew! We’ll have our platter burnished,
Laid with care on our own shelf!
With a fire-new spoon we’re furnished,
And a goblet for ourself,
Rinsed like something sacrificial
Ere ’tis fit to touch our chaps —
Marked with L. for our initial!
(He-he! There his lily snaps!)
The 2nd accusation that the speaker accuses brother Lawrence of is knowledge in plates also, monks create their own dishes by clay an indication of modesty , and brother Lawrence put his initial on his plate he is a good artist , his plate will be a remarkable production, so he is mocking again his ability the artistic abilities of brother Lawrence, brother Lawrence is very careful in handling these pots which shows the good quality of brother Lawrence, he takes care of everything he creates other plates and cups but the speaker makes fun even of the way brother Lawrence washes the dishes, look how he tries to pick on insignificant things because he did not find anything against brother Lawrence, he makes fun of brother Lawrence way of marking his initials , notice the punctuations and the way browning used them in a very elaborate way.
The speaker in this stanza is mocking brother Lawrence for his delicate care , in the fourth stanza the speaker continues by starting to spread gossip .
Saint, forsooth! While brown Dolores
Squats outside the Convent bank
With Sanchicha, telling stories,
Steeping tresses in the tank,
Blue-black, lustrous, thick like horsehairs,
— Can’t I see his dead eye glow,
Bright as ’twere a Barbary corsair’s?

Here he starts to spread more deep issues about brother Lawrence, he says when we go out of the convent we could see the gypsies with thick hair and colorful hair , he says I can see his eyes eye glow = an indication of lust , how come a dead eye glow???? He accuse him of lust but at the same time he describes brother Lawrence's eye by dead how can a dead eye be lusty??!! brother Lawrence when he is out of the convent he do not look at women it is the speaker who looks, the gypsy lady sits near the convent spreading her beautiful hair and her colorful dress sitting in a tempting way telling stories and she will be given some money for her stories, look how meticulous he describes the woman which means he is the one looking at women in a lusty eye. Then he compares brother Lawrence to a lustrous villain , there is no evidence that brother Lawrence has a desire for women , the speaker here expresses his feelings louder than his thoughts so by showing these feelings or accusations for brother Lawrence but he is the man who has all these temptations as if he is describing himself.

When he finishes refection,
Knife and fork he never lays
Cross-wise, to my recollection,

Again he makes fun of him on the table , he says when he finishes refection he never puts his knife and fork cross- wise and he swears , but in reality it is the speaker who does not have , even in drinking he says I table manners, he says I drink in 3 sips for trinity , but for brother Lawrence he drinks in one gulp , these accusations are to show how brother Lawrence is lower than them

Another thing during the meal time , he starts by talking about melons , Oh, those melons? = his lust for food, usually when they cut melons it is washed and then devided between all the monks , what does the speaker do he asks brother Lawrence something about a plant because brother Lawrence is a lover of plants when he starts to explains things about the plants the speaker devours his share you see how horrible is this man!!! This very ironic and sarcastic, But what he claims here is the opposite he claims that brother Lawrence eats others share he does not share.

Strange! — And I, too, at such trouble,
! used in a skillful way to show sarcasm, the emphasis of the behavior of the speaker

Keep them close-nipped on the sly!


He is the one who eats all of the pieces , and leaves only the skins beside each other , we can feel how the speaker here is trying to imply false accusations on brother Lawrence.

مسرحيات مصدرها اجتماعي
ان انتشار التعليم والعلم والصحف والمجلات والأندية والجمعيات مهدت لظهور الطبقة المثقفة التي اصبحت عماد المجتمع وركنه الركين . اتصلت هذه الطبقة بالفكر الأوربي مما مهد لظهور الافكار الإصلاحية وصار الكتاب يعنون بحاجات الشعب ومشكلاته ويقترحون العلاج الشافي والحلول لمشكلاته
فالأدب قد اتجه إلى الشعب والمسررحية الإجتماعية انبثقت من الحياة الإجتماعية الجديده وتنوعت موضوعاتها من الحياة المعاصرة , وحاولت ان تعرض المشكلات وتبين الحلول في بعض المواضع
لقد اتخذ الأدب الاجتماعي اتجاهات متعددة منها :
- اهتمام الأدب بالدعوة الى حياة العلم والحضاره
- - الحمله على المفاسد الناشئة على التطرف
- المطالبة بالحقوق الإنسانيه
- العطف على الطبقة البائسة
- مناصرة المرأة ورفع المستوى العائلي
- ومن هذه المسرحيات الشاب الجاهل السكير لطنوس الحر
- الهوى والرقاد لزينب فواز
ويغلب على المسرحية الإجتماعية القرب الى المسرحية الشعبيه ( الميلو دراما ) التي تعني بابراز الحوادث المؤثرة المبنية على المفاجأت المستغربةووقائع المبارزة والتنكر والقتل والتسميم والخطف والترف ,وتسرف في اتجاهها نحو الذوق العامي الرخيص لما تدغدغه من انواع التأثير الرخيص المبتذله , وهي لا تعني بدراسة الشخصية الانسانيه وتحليلها وتغليبها على الحوادث وتقدم لنا هذه الشخصيات اما سوداء واما بيضاء ولا اثر للتعقيد او الصراع في نفسياتها وتنعدم فيها الصبغة المحليه التي تبرز اخلاق البلاد وعاداتها وخصائصها.
الملهاه
مسرحية تحاول اضحاك المتفرجين عبر مواقف مضحكه تستند إلى المفارقات , بدأها النقاش في مسرحيته البخيل التي تأثر فيها بموليير ثم مسرحية السليط الحسود وهي ملهاه اخلاقيه
الهزلية : نمط من انماط الملهاه يعتمد على المواقف السخيفة والحركات التهريجية .
مسرحية الجهلاء المدعين بالعلم لأبراهيم الطبيب , والمعلم التعيس لجورج دخول , ويكون الاضحاك فيها غاية بذاته
ظل التأليف المسرحي يخضع لمبدأ المحاكاه وظلت احد مهام الكاتب ايهام المشاهد بالحقيقه وان ما يراه على خشبة المسرح ليس الا صورة تحاكي ما يحدث من واقع الحياه, ولكن بعض المؤلفين ضاقوا بالانماط الواقعية للشخصيات والاحداث واستعانوا باستخدام ادوات المسرح الحديث من ديكور واضاءة وحركة وبناء فبنوا المسرحية بناء غير واقعي فيه كثير من الرموز والتفكك في السياق والمكان والزمان , وفيه خروج عن العقل والمنطق في سبيل الكشف عن حقيقة اعمق داخل الاشياء لافي ظواهرها وابعادها الخارجية ,ويتميز اسلوب المسرحية هذه التعبيري بالشاعرية والحيويه والنقلات المفاجئة والعبارات الرمزية , مثالها : مسرح بريخت الذي اعتمد على المحاكاهومسرحه المحلي قدم مفهوما جديدا للمسرح الكلاسيكي وغايته والعلاقه بينه وبين الجمهور
مسرح العبث ( اللا معقول )
ظهر في منتصف القرن العشرين مسرح فيه طرافه وغرابه وخروج عن المألوف في المسرح , هو مسرح العبث ومسرح العبث خطوة في سبيل التجريد والبعد عن الواقع في صوره الخارجية والبحث عن صورة الواقع في دخيلة النفس الإنسانية وفيما تنطوي عليه من اشكال الحياه وسلوك الناس من حقائق كامنه تحت ذلك السطح الظاهري
ومسرح العبث في موضوعه يعكس احساس الكاتب العربيبعبث الحياة العصريه وقيامها على كثير من الأوضاع اللامعقولة بعد ان انهارت العقيدة الدينيه عند كثير من الناس نتيجة الحروب والصراع الطبقي والمادي في ذلك المجتمع. فليس في مسرحية العبث موضوع بالمعنى الصحيح ولا تطور للأحداث يقوم على النمو العضوي كالمألوف في المسرح التقليدي او غيره من اشكال المسرح الحديث . ومع هذا لم يتخل مسرح العبث تماما عن كل المقومات العامه المعهودة للمسرح . فقد تقوم المسرحية على موقف واحد ثابت يدل بركوده وثباته ودوران الشخصيات والحوار فيه فيما يشبه الدائرة المغلقه على عبث الحياه وعدم جدواها او على تسلط فكره من الأفكار او وضع من الأوضاع على انسان العصر الحديث كالذي نراه لدى كاتب المسرح من مثل ( صمويل بيكيت ) فالحوار في مسرح العبث يتألف من كليشيهات لا معنى لها ومن تكرار عبارات نمطية آلية وهكذا يواجه مشاهدو مسرحية العبث بصورة مجسمة كاريكاتورية لعالمهم الذي يعيشون فيه , وهو عالم بلا ايمان او ارادة او حرية حقيقيه , وتختلط المأساة بالهزلية مما يثير الضحك او الدهشة .. قدم توفيق الحكيم مسرحية ( يا طالع الشجرة ) ضمن مسرح العبث
لقد فرضت عبثية الحياة ظهور هذا المسرح فالحروب والمآسي دفعت لابتكار اشكال فنيه تناسب ذلك الشعور ولكن مسرح العبث لم يلبث ان قل شأنه وضعف التفات الناس اليه واصبح الآن مجرد حركة في تاريخ التأليف المسرحي وان كان قد ترك بصماته باشكال مختلفه ودرجات متفاوته على كتاب المسرح ومخرجيه
المسرح التسجيلي
خطوه ابعد من المسرح الملحمي في محاولة اشراك المشاهد فيما يعرضه المسرح من قضايا , يصور المسرح التسجيلي الواقع السياسي والاجتماعي , يستعين المؤلف في هذا التسجيل بوسائل لم تكن مقبوله ولا مألوفه في المسرح من قبل , فيورد الاحصاءات او اقوال الصحف والاذاعات , ويحرك الممثلين على المسرح في مجموعات تكاد تختفي فيها شخصية الفرد ,ويقوم الممثلون فيها بأكبر دور في لحظات متعاقبه من دون الحاجه الى تغيير في الملبس او المظهر كالمعهود في المسرح التقليدي , ومن اشهر كتاب المسرح التسجيلي بيتر فايس , فالبناء المنطقي المألوف يكاد يتلاشى وكذلك الشخصيات الناميه والصراع الممتد.
خصائص المسرح الجديد :
- الاقلال من قيمة النص كعنصر ادبي جوهري في المسرحية والنظر اليه كمجرد نقطة انطلاق للتمثيل والاخراج والتصور للقضية التي ينطوي عليها النص
- يميل المسرح الحديث في اغلبه الى الاقتراب من الجمهور واثارة وعيه وتفكيره وتحطيم ذلك الحائط التقليدي لتصبح قاعة المسرح وخشبته في تجاوب وتفاعل مستمر ومن هنا لم يعد المخرج في حاجه الى كثير من الأثاث والديكور والستائر
- لم يعد العرض المسرحي ينقسم الى فصول متكامله يسدل الستار على كل منها , بل غدى المشاهد يرى عرضا مستمرا في جميع الاحوال
غير ان هذا لا يعني ان المسرح التقليدي قد انقضى وان الجمهور قد انصرف عن المسرحيات ذات النص الادبي انصرافا تاما ولكن الجمهور بدأ يتذوق تلك الاتجاهات الحديثه
اما المسرح العربي فقد بدأ منذ سنوات يتأثر تأثرا واضحا بالالتزام بالموضوع من ناحيه وبالتجريد من الاخراج من ناحية اخرى , فكاد يختفي التاليف التقليدي لتأخذ مكانه مسرحيات اقرب الى المسرح الملحمي او التسجيلي مع اعتماد على كثير من الرموز الصالحه للتعبير عن الموضوعات السياسيه
