For international conference interpreting, itself an early example of a ‘global profession’, globalization is a mixed blessing. While the trend to carry out transaction in business, politics, arts, and science on a world-wide scale could be assumed to boost the role of interpreters in international communication, the spread of English as a lingua franca largely offsets this potential need.
